Notes: The CD4 molecule has several biological functions, physiologically as a receptor for major histocompatibility complex class II molecules on antigen-presenting cells, and pathologically as a receptor for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) by its binding to the HIV envelope glycoprotein gp 120 The frequency of’CD4+ cells has been shown to correlate positively with both susceptibility and cytopathogenic effect by HIV. To determine if CD4 expression varied during the cell cycle, a CD4-cxpressing monocytoid cell line. U 937 clone 16, was synchronized with regard lo cell growth. The CD4 antigen was analysed with regard to expression, density and rate of reappearance after treatment with trypsin during the different phases of the cell cycle. The CD4 reappearance rate was found to be maximal during the S phase. This was followed by an increased expression and density in the late S G2 phase. Thus a cell cycle-dependent expression of CD4 molecules on the cell surface was observed.

Notes: Summary This paper considers a discrete sampling scheme for the approximate recovery of initial data for one dimensional parabolic initial boundary value problems on a bounded interval. To obtain a given approximate, data is sampled at a single time and at a finite number of spatial points. The significance of this inversion scheme is the ability to accurately predict the error in approximation subject to choice of sample time and spatial sensor locations. The method is based on a discrete analogy of the continuous orthogonality for Sturm-Liouville systems. This property, which is of independent mathematical interest, is the notion of discrete orthogonal systems, which loosely speaking provides an exact (or approximate) Gauss-type quadrature for the continuous biorthogonality conditions.

Notes: Abstract The problem of determining the temperature at one end of a rod by means of interior temperature measurements has considerable practical importance and has been well studied, however, few exact solutions have been found. Most of the applicable results therefore, have been obtained from the (numerical) analysis of discretized systems. In this paper we present an analytic method for obtaining solutions to this problem which does not require differentiation (only integration) of the interior temperature readings and is valid for general finite energy boundary data and for general radiation boundary conditions at the known end of the rod.

Notes: Abstract Consider a discrete time dynamical systemx k+1=f(x k ) on a compact metric spaceM, wheref:M→M is a continuous map. Leth:M→B k be a continuous output function. Suppose that all of the positive orbits off are dense and that the system is observable. We prove that any output trajectory of the system determinesf andh andM up to a homeomorphism. IfM is a compact Abelian topological group andf is an ergodic translation, then any output trajectory determines the system up to a translation and a group isomorphism of the group.
