Notes: Abstract A 33-year-old woman underwent bone-marrow transplantation following radiation and chemotherapy for chronic myelocytic leukemia (CML); immunosuppressive therapy was continued for graft-versus-host disease. Five months after successful transplantation, she developed necrotizing retinitis in both eyes with rapid progression over the following weeks. Due to her immunosuppressed state the patient developed pneumonia and died. Postmortem evaluation of the retinal lesions in both eyes disclosed infection byToxoplasma gondii, which was also found in the brain and myocardium. Multiple viable toxoplasmic cysts were observed at the transition zone from a necrotic to a normal retina. Additionally, cysts ofToxoplasma gondii were seen in the adjacent intact retina and in areas of necrosis with almost complete absence of retinal or choroidal inflammation. Toxoplasmosis should therefore be considered along with fungi and viruses in the differential diagnosis of necrotizing retinochoroiditis in immunocompromised patients.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der Morbus Coats stellt eine Erkrankung der Wandstruktur retinaler Gefäße dar.
Notes: Summary Coats' disease represents a disorder of the retinal vascular walls. In a series of 112 consecutive eyes with Coats' disease the involvement was unilateral in 90.2%. The majority (72%) of patients were male. 57.8% were under 20 years of age. There was, however, a second peak of the disease (30.4%) between the age of 41 and 60. Severe cases were found mainly among juvenile patients, whereas in the senile group milder cases prevailed. Fluorescein angiographic findings comprised vascular aneurysms in almost all cases, rarefaction and coarsening of the capillary bed in 71%, capillary occlusions in 70%, occlusion of arterioles or arteries in 27%, shunt formations in 27%, extensive widening of arteries or veins in 27% and leakage of dye mainly in advanced cases. The participation of the central retina in the disease process was variable. Evidence is presented that Leber's miliary aneurysm retinitis is not a separate entity but a special form of Coats' disease.

Notes: Summary Results of treating diabetic retinopathy by light-coagulation are reported. Early symptoms, e.g. microaneuryms, lipid deposits and retinal oedema, improved after light-coagulation. Coagulation during early phases of the disease prevented development of vascular proliferation, haemorrhages and retinal detachment. Where vascular proliferation and fibrous changes of the vitreous body were already present when the therapy was instituted, the further deleterious course was prevented in only a few cases.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1. A report is given of a malignant tumor in tropical cultivated fish which is not yet described in the literature and which is apparently caused by a virus, since it can be transferred by cell-free extracts. 2. The infectious parcticles can be centrifuged out at 40,000 to 50,000 rev. ¦min. from the tumor extract, and are rapidly inactivated in 50% glycerine and by drying. 3. Out of 9 types of fish tested, 4 became infected while 5 other nearly related types were resistant. Of the sensitive sorts, lebistes reticulatus is the most predisposed although the embryos and young fish are resistant. After the first 2 to 4 weeks of life, this juvenile resistance is completely lost. 4. The latent period is individually different, but in the majority of experimental animals it was found to be between 25 and 40 days. 5. The tumors occur most frequently in the kidneys, and then wander through the body cavities and destroy the musculature, heart and intestine. The liver, spleen, ovaries and brain are not attacked. According to the histological picture, it appears to be a largely undifferentiated, mesenchymal tumor, which can evidently occur in different organs. 6. Since the tumors often wander into the bloodstream and their cells possess only a slight degree of cohesion, spreading of the tumor by way of the bloodstream (metastase formation) is very probable.
Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.
