    Notes: A fast reciprocating probe system with a long drive shaft was incorporated into a multi-junction lower hybrid (LH) wave launcher on JT-60U in order to investigate an improved coupling mechanism of the radio frequency wave to the core plasma. The system has been operated reliably over a horizontal scan of 25 cm in 1.5 s using a compact pneumatic cylinder drive and springs. A double probe measurement provided the scrape-off layer plasma profile between the last closed flux surface and the first wall with the spatial resolution of 1−2 mm measured with a laser displacement gauge. The profiles of the electron density ne and temperature Te were in good agreement with those obtained with a triple probe method. During the LH wave injection with good coupling to the core plasma, an increase in the local Te was observed in front of the LH launcher mouth. The local ne was (7−10)×1016 m−3, consistent values needed for the good coupling. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The dependence of the critical layer thickness hc on mole fraction x of Si1−xGex/Si heterostructures is determined by direct observations of misfit dislocations by using the electron beam induced current (EBIC) technique and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The EBIC images of the Si1−xGex/Si interfaces show square-grid patterns running in the 〈110〉 directions. These patterns are identified by TEM observation to be misfit dislocations generated at the Si1−xGex/Si interface. The dependence of hc on x is compared with the results reported by R. People and J. C. Bean [Appl. Phys. Lett. 47, 322 (1985) and 49, 229 (1986)]. The comparison reveals that inconsistency exists between them, especially in the range of x〈0.3. This inconsistency is considered to arise from the difference in the techniques adopted to determine the hc's.

    Notes: Ultrafine ZnFe2O4 particles less than 10 nm in diameter formed by the coprecipitation method were observed using transmission electron microscopy. The chemical composition of these particles was consistent with that of the stoichiometric bulk material. The apparent lattice structure could be observed. These observations revealed that particles 5 nm in diameter were fine, defect-free, and cubic single crystals having a spinel structure. The particle surface became more and more circular with decreasing particle size. Even a particle as small as 2 nm was seen to be homogeneous and possess a spinel structure. To determine the particle size it was necessary to disperse particles by covering their surfaces with a double-adsorbed surfactant film. The particle size distribution was seen to be approximately log normal.

    Notes: A high intensity deuteron ion source has been developed in order to increase the neutron flax from the D–T neutron source for Fusion Neutronics Source at JAERI. It is possible to extract more than 50 mA of deuteron beam at the beam energy of 50 keV. The lifetime of the tungsten filaments utilized in the ion source has been achieved in over 300 h with continuous operation. The high intensity deuteron ion source for the International Fusion Material Irradiation Facility is being designed on the basis of the experimental results and the experience obtained from the present ion source. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A JAERI (Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute)negative ion source was tested at LBL (Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory) as part of the U.S.–Japan Fusion Cooperation Program. By varying the strength of the magnetic filter from 450 to 930 G cm, we compared production, transport, and extraction of the negative ions. The maximum current densities, which were obtained at the corresponding optimum filter strength for each gas species, were 10.4 mA/cm2 for H− and 8.4 mA/cm2 for D− at arc discharges of 40 kW. The ratio of the ion current densities (JD−/JH−) is about 0.8, which is higher than 1/(2)1/2 . The electron to negative ion ratio was 13 for hydrogen and 38 for deuterium at the corresponding optimum filter strength. The higher ratio in deuterium is probably due to higher space potential of deuterium plasma by a few volts.

    Notes: A large volume negative ion source, which has a newly devised magnetic filter called a PG filter, was designed and tested. The PG filter produces a uniform magnetic filter field over a large extraction area of 14×36 cm2 by flowing a high current through the plasma grid itself. By optimizing the filter strength, we succeeded to produce 3.4-A 75-keV negative hydrogen ion beams for 50 ms from 253 apertures of 11.3 mm diam with an average current H− density of 13 mA/cm2.

    Notes: A new electron gun utilizing a magnetic multipole plasma generator was designed and fabricated as the heat source of the high heat flux test facility, called JEBIS (JAERI electron beam irradiation stand). By changing the acceleration grids, this electron gun is able to produce a pencil to a sheetlike electron beams up to 4 A at 100 keV for 1 ms to continuous mode. In this electron gun, magnetic lens system is not adopted to focus the electron beam, but the space charge neutralization effect by the beam plasma produced downstream of the electron gun is utilized to prevent the blow-up of the electron beam. In addition, high permeability metal is embedded in the first and the second grids to magnetically shield the earth field and the stray field from the beam bending magnet. It was experimentally demonstrated that wide range of heat flux from 0.2 MW/m2 to over 2000 MW/m2 can be realized at the test sample position about 1.7 m downstream of the electron gun.

    Notes: To characterize the genes for enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of polyamines (PAs), their expression profiles were investigated and the levels of PAs in Arabidopsis thaliana quantified. In the Arabidopsis genome, eight genes involved in PAs biosynthesis were identified and the expression profiles of these genes were analysed, not only under abiotic stress to determine whether they were stress-inducible, constitutive, or stress-repressible, but also in various organs to show their tissue specificity. AtADC2 and AtSPMS mRNAs, encoding arginine decarboxylase and spermine synthase, clearly increased in response to NaCl and dehydration and abscisic acid treatments. Stress-inducible accumulation of AtADC2 mRNA correlated with putrescine (Put) accumulation under NaCl and dehydration treatments. In a cold condition, AtSAMDC2 mRNA increased significantly. AtADC2 and AtSAMDC2 mRNA were expressed in sexual organs such as flowers, buds and immature siliques. PAs also accumulated in sexual organs. These results suggest that the transcripts of eight genes involved in PA biosynthesis show different profiles of expression not only in response to environmental stress but also during plant development.

    Notes: Roots in the soil are illuminated by far-red (FR) light passed through plant tissues in the daytime, and are in complete darkness at night. To evaluate whether gene expression of roots is affected by a dark-FR light cycle, gene expression profiles were analysed for dark-adapted versus light-grown plants and for FR light-illuminated versus dark-adapted plants using the RIKEN Arabidopsis full-length cDNA microarray (containing approximately 7000 independent, full-length cDNA groups). Among candidate dark- and FR-regulated genes, several were further analysed. Eleven dark-inducible and five dark-repressed genes were characterized. Almost all the dark-inducible and –repressed genes were oppositely regulated by FR light illumination. The functions of dark- and FR-responsive genes and the significance of FR light-regulated gene expression in roots under ground are discussed.
