Notes: The molecular and crystal structures of 16 N-n-alkyl N,N-dimethylammonioacetic acid bromides with chain lengths between n = 1 and n = 16 have been determined. All compounds from n = 5 to n = 16 form bilayers with interdigitated chains. The even-numbered chains display the chain packing type M2II. The chain packing of the odd-numbered chain compounds is less regular. The head groups of all compounds are connected via electrostatic N+...Br− interactions, and by OH...Br− hydrogen bonds. The compounds with short chains are packed in different ways. Their molecular conformation depends on the crystal packing.

Notes: [Auszug] SUPERFLUID 3He is a fascinating liquid -it has an unusually large number of internal degrees of freedom, it is inherently anisotropic and displays uncommon magnetic properties. There exist three superfluid phases: A, Ai and a B phase which all differ in their spin-configurations. The A phase, in ...

Notes: Abstract The flow dependence of spin susceptibilities in superfluid 3 He-A and -B is studied theoretically. It is shown that in the A phase хA∥, the component of the static spin susceptibility parallel to $$\hat d$$ , increases rapidly in the presence of mass current. A similar behavior is found for all components of хB, the susceptibility tensor of the B phase.

Notes: Critical currents in both superfluid 3He-A and 3He-B are calculated within a weak coupling model. The Fermi liquid correction is explicitly included. As a by-product we obtain the nonlinear superfluid densities in 3He-A and 3He-B, which depend strongly on the current.

Notes: Abstract Exact results, both old and new, on the stability of saturated ferromagneiism in the Hubbard model and its extensions are discussed. For the Hubbard model with all nearest-neighbor interactions a new set of rigorous criteria, valid at half filling, is derived and a generalization of Nagaoka's theorem to finite interactions is presented. Of all coupling parameters only the on-site and the exchange interaction are found to be essential. At strong coupling comparison with the effective t — J model is made. Further extensions, e.g. to the band-degenerate case, are discussed.

Notes: We have calculated the pair-breaking critical current for superfluid 3He-B at all temperatures by taking into account the anisotropic distortion of the order parameter in the presence of superflow. We find that the component of the order parameter along the flow δ∥ is strongly reduced, while δ⊥, the component perpendicular to the flow, slightly increases. The superfluid density ϱs has also been determined as a function of the superfluid velocity v s. Fermi liquid corrections are explicitly included and it is shown that these corrections lead to a drastic change in the functional dependence of δ∥, δ⊥, ϱs, etc., on v s. In contrast to this, the pair-breaking critical current is shown to be independent of the Fermi liquid corrections.

Notes: Abstract We show that the limit of large dimensions (d=∞) can be used to obtain accurate variational results even for low dimensional (d=1, 2) fermionic systems, such as the Hubbard model or the periodic Anderson model. Using explicit correlated variational wave functions this is achieved by evaluating the expectation values for d=∞ with the correct d-dimensional density of states and including 1/d-corrections. For example, an application of this approach to the periodic Anderson model in d=1 shows that the result for the ground state energy, the momentum distributions of c- and f-electrons, and the spin-spin and density-density correlations functions for the f-electrons are in excellent agreement with the variational Monte Carlo data of Shiba.

Notes: Proline and prolylproline dipeptide derived surfactants promote the asymmetric hydrogenation of (Z)-methyl α-acetamidocinnamate in water in the presence of the catalytic system [Rh(cod)2]BF4 + BPPM. Activity and enantioselectivity are enhanced significantly and the results in water are similar to those obtained with organic solvents. The possibility of a chiral induction was investigated in the presence of the optically active amino acid and peptide amphiphiles and an achiral rhodium catalyst [Rh(bdpb)(cod)]BF4. The analysis of the low optical induction gave some indications of the site where the reaction takes place within the micelle. Selected critical micelle concentrations (cmc) of the new prepared surfactants were determined by surface tension measurements. Chirality 10:754-759, 1998. © 1998 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: The NMR frequencies of the helical texture in 3He-A in the presence of a magnetic field parallel to the superflow are reexamined in the entire stability region. The effects of the anisotropic contribution to the spin susceptibility are explicitly included and are shown to leave previous results qualitatively unchanged. On the other hand, we find that the anisotropic contribution gives rise to quantitative corrections of maximally 20% at T/T c = 0.95, while its contribution in the immediate vicinity of T c is negligibly small.
