    Notes: The agenda of purchasers of health care in the National Health Service (NHS) is increasingly dominated by the issue of priority setting. This is a consequence of the interplay of limited budgets, increasing demands on health care services and a contracting process that makes explicit resource decisions that were previously implicit through clinical discretion. Purchasers are increasingly concerned to show that their decisions are rationally informed and embody a professional and public consensus. This paper examines literature that suggests variables, other than rational determinants, play a part in the process of priority setting at the purchaser and provider level. The interface of public, political and professional agendas in this process help explain the lack of national uniformity in both setting priorities and their translation into practice. Consequently, there is a need for more comprehensive exploration of the relationship between the setting of priorities and their effect on practice.

    Notes: Some recent results for the force on a translating rigid three-dimensional body in incompressible flow, in which the integration is over the vorticity field rather than surface pressure, are interpreted from a point of view that distinguishes changes of fluid impulse directly attributable to the vorticity field from those due to its image system in the body. An expression is first derived geometrically for a sphere in inviscid fluid; the flow is taken to consist of discrete vortex loops whose change in impulse, and that of the image system in the sphere, are calculated via their projected areas. As an example, the force on a sphere due to an infinite line vortex is calculated exactly. To generalize the geometrical derivation to bodies of any shape, a reciprocal theorem is proved concerning the impulse of the image system of a dipole. This yields the inviscid form of a result derived mathematically by Howe [J. Fluid Mech. 206, 131 (1989)]. Physical interpretations of the various terms in Howe's expression are offered, and the relationship to a very similar independent result by Chang [Proc. R. Soc. London Ser. A 437, 517 (1992)] is discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Of 1978 fungal colonies isolated on malt-salt agar from twenty 5-kg samples of pecans harvested late in the season, 39% were Cladosporium, 21% were Penicillium, 9% were Alternaria or Epicoccum, 8% Pestalotia or Monochaeta, 4% Trichothecium, 4% Aspergillus niger, and less than 2% were Fusarium, Phomopsis, Rhizopus, Aspergillus, and miscellaneous genera. Forty-four of 260 representative isolates were persistently toxic to day-old cockerels. Toxigenic Penicillium spp. included P. citrinum, P. terrestre, P. cyclopium, P. funiculosum, P. roquefortii, P. purpurogenum, P. rubrum, and P. rugulosum. Toxigenic isolates of other genera included Aspergillus fiavus, A. cervinus, Alternaria alternata, Trichothecium roseum, Pestalotia sp., and Fusarium spp. Additional key words are Carya illinoensis, mycotoxins.

    Notes: Shelf-life and quality of fresh red meat can be extended by using modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) coupled with refrigerated storage. MAP with elevated levels of carbon dioxide and reduced levels of oxygen inhibits the growth of various aerobic spoilage bacteria and prolongs color stability of fresh red meat. However, in-package headspace conditions are dynamic because of permeability of packaging films, microbial growth, pigment oxidation, gas absorption and mobilization in meat, and lipid oxidation. To further extend the shelf-life and quality of meat, dynamic MAP systems are required to respond to the changes in packaged meat. This review focuses on the changing conditions within the microenvironment of packaged meat. The growth of microorganisms, meat pigment oxidation, and carbon dioxide absorption in MAP fresh red meats are considered. Examples of various dynamic MAP systems currently in use are given, along with the specific requirements of each system regarding meat fabrication, packaging, distribution, and display. Mathematical models, as a tool to understand in-package micro-environment modifications over time and how these changes influence meat quality and shelf-life, are also discussed.

    Notes: The recruitment crisis in nursing: placing Irish psychiatric nursing in context — a review There is a decline in recruitment to pre-registration programmes in psychiatric nursing in Ireland. This article discusses factors that may relate to the Irish situation in the context of relevant international literature on nurse recruitment. It is noted that disciplines and courses in Ireland, such as social care, that engage in similar work to that of psychiatric nurses do not suffer from such a shortage of applicants. Whilst it is difficult to account for this difference, a number of factors identified from the literature are discussed. The need to highlight differences with general nursing and the importance of career guidance are seen as important in overcoming prejudices and stereotypes. From a review of the literature it appears that studies dedicated to recruitment to psychiatric nursing alone are notable by their paucity, and absent in the case of Ireland. Therefore, the available literature fails to fully explain the fall in psychiatric nurse recruitment compared to the robust recruitment position of social care. It is argued that dedicated research on recruitment to psychiatric nursing within an Irish setting is needed if a sustainable recruitment policy is to be implemented to reverse the long-term decline in recruitment.
