Notes: Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), and measurements of forward current-voltage characteristics at various temperatures were used to study metallurgical reactions in WSix/GaAs formed by sputter deposition. Both SIMS and RBS showed that annealing at 800 °C results in migration of W and Si into GaAs when the atomic ratio x deviates from 0.5. On the other hand, the forward current-voltage characteristics of WSix/GaAs diodes at various temperatures showed that the excess current across the interface induced after annealing is large when x deviates substantially from 0.5, in agreement with the SIMS and RBS results. It is suggested that the migration of W and Si is directly involved in the thermal degradation of the structural and electrical properties of the WSix/GaAs interface and its x dependence.

Notes: The inverse Raman band shape in the vicinity of single photon resonance is interpreted in terms of both a double quantum transition and a dynamical Stark effect. It is pointed out that what is measured in the inverse Raman spectroscopy is not identical with what is measured in the corresponding Raman gain spectroscopy. The absorption change due to the dynamical Stark effect is shown to explain well the band shape as well as the position of the inverse Raman spectrum.

Notes: Light and electron microscopic studies and energy dispersive X-ray analysis disclosed that the essential cause of gingival discoloration following the placement of a metallic crown, was marked deposition of melanin pigment. Deposition of melanin pigment was observed in epithelial cells, on basement membranes, and in fibroblasts, macrophages and among intercellular ground substance of the proprial layer. Brown or dark brown colored granules were observed in the deep portion of the proprial layer. Some metallic elements as silver and sulfur were detected. It was presumed that these materials were dental metals accidentally implanted in gingival tissues during the therapeutic procedure. The deposition of melanin pigment closely corresponded with mucosal tissue where these materials were present in the deep portion of the proprial layer. These findings suggested that these materials influenced the physiological metabolism of melanin and induced its pathological deposition in the proprial tissue.

Notes: A case of extramedullary plasmacytoma of the left palatal tonsil in a 51-year-old woman is reported. The histological features of the tumor are typical, except for the appearance of crystal inclusions in plasma cells, histiocytes and matrices. The developmental process and the nature of the crystal inclusions are discussed, based on electron-microscopic findings. The patient has been followed for one year post-operatively, and no clinical evidence of recurrence has been observed.

Notes: The functional role of Langerhans cells (LCs) in oral cancer was studied, based on a quantitative analysis of LCs in squamous cell carcinomas arising from the tongue. LCs were identified by their positiveness for S100-protein and other cytological characters based on PAP method. LCs increased in number in the cancer region and showed an intimate relationship with lymphocytes in terms of their number and distribution. Moreover, in those cases with many LCs, clusters consisting of LCs and lymphocytes were often found to combine into “hydropic degeneration-like” lesions as seen in allergic disease such as dermal lichen planus. These findings, as well as the review of literature, suggested some immunological role of LCs in oral carcinoma.

Notes: Two cases of oral B-lymphomas with numerous Russell body-like inclusions arc described. One occurred primarily in the hard palate of a 59-year-old female with Sjogren's syndrome, and was diagnosed as lymphoplasmacytoid immunoeytoma by Kiel's classification. The other occurred secondarily in the buccal mucosa of a 44-year-old female whose first affected site was orbital soft tissues, and was diagnosed as extramedullary plasmacytoma. The diagnostic problems and the nature of the Russell body-like inclusions are discussed based on the immunoperoxidase (PAP) method and electron microscopic study. The first patient is well without recurrence 19 months after surgery, while the second patient developed extra-medullary plasmacytoma in the abdomen 5 months after surgery for the buccal plasmacytoma.

Notes: A benign fibroblastic lesion simulating malignancy is reported. The lesion occurred in the right maxilla of an 11-year-old girl and perforated the outer cortical plate, suggesting malignancy. The biopsy, however, revealed proliferation of fibroblasts and fibrocytes with neither prominent atypia nor mitosis in a myxoid matrix. Electron microscopy showed that some fibroblastic cells were indeed myofibroblasts. As the lesion did not belong to any established entities, the final pathological diagnosis of benign fibroblastic lesion was made, leading to conservative surgery. The patient is well without recurrence 18 months after surgery.

Notes: Based on the large celloidin-embedded section method, human mandibles from 62 autopsied carcinoma cases were examined histologically to determine the pathological characteristics of any mandibular metaslases. Metastasis was confirmed histologically in 10 (16%) of the 62 cases and was comparatively frequent with gastric and pulmonary carcinomas. The hemopoietic areas in the mandibular marrow seemed to favor the early deposition of tumor cells. These micrometastatic foci seemed to increase in size, spreading to all parts, including the periodontal tissue or anterior part of the mandibular body. Increased hemopoietic activity following lodgement, seemed to play an important role for further metastases. Roentogenographic examination did not seem to be the best method of detecting metastasis.

Notes: A rare case of extramedullary plasmacytoma seen in a patient with a Castleman's lesion is described. The mass occurred in the cervical nodes of a 61-year-old female patient, and the primary site was the intra- or peri-parotid nodes. The histological examination revealed abnormal characteristic lymph follicles and nodular proliferation of plasma cells in the same lymph nodes. The neoplastic change of plasma cells was studied on the basis of the immunoperoxidase (PAP) method. The patient is well without recurrence 15 months after total resection.
