Notes: Abstract. The melting of ice in porous glass having different distribution of pores sizes is analyzed in details. One shows that confined water crystallizes only partially and that an interface layer, between the ice crystallites and the surface of the pore, remains liquid. Properties of this non crystalline interface at low temperature is studied by NMR and DSC. Both methods lead to an interface thickness h of the order of 0.5 nm, this explains why water do not crystallize when the dimension of confinement is less than a critical length $d^{*}\sim 1$ nm. The variation of the melting enthalpy per gram of total amount of water with the confinement length is explained taking into account two effects: a) the presence of this layer of water at the interface and b) the linear variation of the melting enthalpy $\Delta H_{m}$ with the melting temperature T m . From the data of the literature one draws the same conclusions concerning other solvents in similar porous materials. Also one points out the important role of the glass temperature T g in preventing the crystallization of the liquids confined in small pores and/or between the crystallites and the surface of the pores.

Notes: Abstract This paper reports on the development of all sol-gel EC devices, having the configuration WO3/ormolyte/SnO2:Mo, WO3/ormolyte/SnO2:Sb and WO3/ormolyte/SnO2:Sb:Mo, where all three internal layers, including the ionically conductive inorganic-organic hybrid (ormolyte), are prepared via the sol-gel route. The electrochemical and optical properties of EC devices are presented and their cycling stability and reversibility of their optical modulation assessed. The transmission modulation of the devices depends on the thickness of the active electrochromic, counter-electrode and ormolyte layer. The electrochemical and optical properties of individual films and the structural properties of the ormolyte are described and correlated with the stability of the all sol-gel EC devices.

Notes: Abstract Hybrid transparent and flexible siloxane-polypropyleneglycol (PPG) materials with covalent bonds between the inorganic (siloxane) and organic (polymeric) phases were prepared by sol-gel process. In order to improve the quality of the mechanical properties of these materials, different amounts of methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) were added to the initial sol. The effect of MTES addition on the structure of the composites was studied by Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS) and 29Si Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (29Si NMR). In absence of MTES, SAXS spectra exhibit a peak that is assigned to spatial correlation due to short range order between the siloxane clusters embedded in the polymeric phase. The experimental results indicate that, for low MTES concentrations ([MTES]/[O] ≤ 0.8, O: ether-type oxygen of PPG), the silicon species resulting from hydrolysis and condensation of MTES fill the open spaces between polymeric chains, interacting with the ether-type oxygens. For larger MTES content ([MTES]/[O] ≥ 0.8), the number of “free” ether-type oxygen sites avalaible for reaction with such silicon species is not large enough. Consequently, a fraction of silicon species resulting from MTES addition graft to siloxane clusters formed by hydrolysis and condensation of the hybrid precursor. For all MTES concentrations the condensation degree of the siloxane phase, determined from 29Si NMR spectroscopy, is high (〉69%), as expected under neutral pH synthesis conditions.

Notes: Abstract New nanocomposites materials have been synthesized. They present electrochemical and photochromic properties. They are based on a hybrid organic-inorganic network, in which tungsten heteropolyoxometalates (PW12O 40 3− , SiW12O 40 4− , W10O 32 4− , polymeric tungstate) are entrapped. High tungsten ratios could be reached and films or bulk materials have been obtained. The structure of these materials is described on the basis of multi-spectroscopic investigations (IR, EPR, NMR). Electrochemical redox reactions have been observed in thin films. Dark blue reversible coloration of the materials is obtained under UV irradiation. The photochromic mechanism has been investigated and shows the reversible formation of carbonyl group.

Notes: Abstract The synthesis of polyoxometallates based macromolecules P n (P=[SiW11O40(SiR)2]4−.4Bu4N+) presenting interesting physical properties (electrochemistry, photochemistry) is detailed. Three different paths are described, organic polymerization of monomers P (R = vinyl, allyl, methacryl, styryl), hydrosilation of monomers (R=H, R′=vinyl) or direct synthesis of polymeric species. These different polymers are characterized from a multi spectroscopic study (IR, NMR), and scattering experiments (QELS, SAXS). Reaction conditions influence both the polymerization yield, the size, the structure, and the properties of these organic-inorganic hybrids.
