    Notes: Abstract: 4-[18F]Fluoro-L-m-tyrosine (FMT), a biochemical probe of striatal dopaminergic function, has been synthesized as an L-3,4-di-hydroxyphenylalanine analog for positron emission tomography. Biochemical characterization of this compound in the rat 30 min after intrajugular administration indicated that in the brain, selective decarboxylation occurred in the striatum, with the formation of 4-fluoro-3-hydroxyphenylethylamine and its metabolites. Positron emission tomography analysis of brain tissue in monkeys (Macaca nemestrina) after intravenous injection of FMT revealed a true time-dependent, specific accumulation of radioactivity in striatum, with a striatum/cerebellum (nonspecific) ratio of 4 at 180 min. Peripheral metabolism accounted for 〈40% of the total radioactivity in arterial blood samples after 120 min. The amino acid remained as the major component throughout the period of investigation (n = 3; 5 min, 95%; 10 min, 85%; 30 min, 67%; 60 min, 62%; 120 min, 60%), with a plasma clearance tl/2 of 112 min. 3-O-Methylated metabolites were not observed. The substrate specificity of FMT, coupled with its limited in vivo peripheral metabolism, makes it a useful, new biochemical probe for in vivo, noninvasive evaluation of central dopaminergic mechanisms.

    Notes: The influence of affective meaning on visual evoked responses was investigated in male college students. By utilization of conditioning procedures, previously meaningless figures (CS) acquired affective loadings, e.g., positive, negative, and neutral. The semantic differential scale and critical flicker interval (CFI) were used as indices of conditioning. Although conditioning occurred without awareness, both measures of conditioning yielded results in the same direction, and all three affective conditions differed significantly from one another. Averaged evoked responses were obtained for each affective stimulus. Amplitudes were found to differ significantly from one another in all three conditions, the unpleasant stimulus eliciting the lowest evoked response, and the neutral condition evoking the highest amplitude. Significantly shorter latencies were obtained for the unpleasant stimulus, whereas the latencies of the positive and neutral stimuli did not differ significantly from each other. The results suggest a direct influence of the emotional centers (limbic system) on the visual perception of affective stimuli. Further studies were suggested to clarify the role of awareness and the specific modalities involved in conditioning.

    Notes: Electrogram Vector Timing and Correlation. Introduction: Discrimination of ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias remains one of the major challenges for appropriate implantable defibrillator (ICD) therapy delivery. The electrogram vector timing and correlation (VTC) algorithm was developed for such rhythm discrimination. The VTC algorithm differentiates normally conducted supraventricular beats from abnormally conducted ventricular beats by comparing the timing and correlation of rate and shock channel electrograms. Methods and Results: Rate and shock channel electrograms of sinus rhythm and induced arrhythmias were collected from 93 patients during ICD placement. The algorithm was developed using data from 50 patients and prospectively tested in a software model with the remaining 43 patients. A sinus rhythm reference was formed by averaging complexes of the shock channel signal aligned by the peak amplitude of the rate channel. Eight features measuring the amplitude and timing of shock channel signal characteristics were extracted from the reference for comparison. When a high-rate rhythm was detected, the VTC algorithm computed the correlation of the arrhythmia complex features with the reference. Rhythms with a sufficient number of uncorrelated beats were classified as ventricular tachycardia (VT). In a dual-chamber implementation, the VTC algorithm is integrated with ventricular and atrial rate comparison (V 〉 A) and stability above an atrial fibrillation rate threshold. The test set consisted of 117 arrhythmias. Dual-chamber sensitivity was 100% (81/81 VT) and specificity was 97% (35/36 supraventricular tachycardia). Single-chamber analysis demonstrated 99% sensitivity and 97% specificity. Conclusion: The VTC algorithm demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity in discriminating between ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias.

    Notes: Atrial Defibrillation Thresholds. Introduction: Little investigation has been conducted to assess the atrial defibrillation thresholds of electrode configurations using electrodes designed for internal ventricular defibrillation (right ventricle [RV], superior vena cava [SVC], and pulse generator housing [Can]) combined with coronary sinus (CS) electrodes. We hypothesized that a CS → SVC+Can electrode configuration would have a lower atrial defibrillation threshold than a standard configuration for defibrillation, RV → SVC+Can. We also tested the atrial defibrillation thresholds of five other configurations. Methods and Results: In 12 closed chest sheep, we situated a two-coil (RV, SVC) defibrillation catheter, a left-pectoral subcutaneous Can, and a CS lead. Atrial fibrillation was burst induced and maintained with continuous infusion of intrapericardial acetyl-β-methylcholine chloride. Using fixed-tilt biphasic shocks, we determined the atrial defibrillation thresholds of seven test configurations in random order according to a multiple-reversal protocol. The peak voltage and delivered energy atrial defibrillation thresholds of CS → SVC+Can (168 ± 67 V, 2.68 ± 2.40 J) were significantly lower than those of RV → SVC+Can (215 ± 88 V, 4.46 ± 3.40 J). The atrial defibrillation thresholds of the other test configurations were RV+CS → SVC+Can 146 ± 59V, 1.92 ± 1.45 J; RV 
→ CS+SVC+Can:191 ± 89V, 3.53 ± 3.19 J; CS →
SVC: 188 ± 98V, 3.77 ± 4.14 J; SVC → CS+Can: 265 ±
145 V, 7.37 ± 9.12 J; and SVC → Can: 516 ± 209 V, 
24.5 ± 15.0 J. Conclusions: The atrial defibrillation threshold of CS → RV SVC+Can. In addition, the low atrial defibrillation threshold of RV+CS → SVC+Can merits further investigation. Based on corroboration of low atrial defibrillation thresholds of CS-based configurations in humans, physicians might consider using CS leads with atrioventricular defibrillators.

    Notes: A novel superlinear graded index separate confinement laser diode structure is proposed. Single stripe diode lasers with 210 μm emitting aperture generate 3.2 W cw, and 6.3 W quasi-cw of light-output power in a phase-locked operation. The catastrophic optical density (30 W/mm) obtained for these lasers is better than that reported for devices with nonabsorbing mirrors.

    Notes: A previous paper of ours (Begleiter, Gross, & Kissin, 1967) demonstrated that it was possible to condition affective meaning to meaningless figures (CS), and significantly alter visual evoked potential (VEP) amplitudes and latencies to them, without the S's awareness of the CS–UCS relationship (Experiment I, totally unaware). In the present study some Ss were deliberately informed that a CS–UCS connection existed; however, the exact nature of their relationship was not divulged (Experiment II, slightly aware). Other Ss were explicitly informed of the correct CS–UCS contingency, and entire conditioning paradigm (Experiment III, fully aware). One physiological (VEP) and two behavioral (interflash interval and semantic differential) indices of conditioning were obtained during an extinction procedure, and demonstrated significant differences between CRs in Experiment II, but none in Experiment III. VEP amplitudes to positive and negative CSs were enhanced in Experiment II, and suppressed in Experiment I, in comparison to the neutral CS. This effect was most marked in responses to the negative CS. It is suggested that level of awareness of the CS–UCS contingency might be reflected in our physiological index of conditioning - VEP amplitude.
