Abstract An experimental investigation has been made of a mixing layer of flows in which turbulence has been created under conditions when the intensity of the velocity pulsations is fairly low, while the integrated scales of the pulsations and transport coefficients are large compared with the corresponding values in the flows without the generated turbulence. The description of the mixing under such conditions is discussed. It is shown that when the integrated scales of the turbulence in the exterior flow exceed the characteristic dimensions of the mixing layer the external turbulence does not have a significant influence on the averaged parameters in the layer.
