Notes: Six samples of congruently melting lithium niobate (∼Li0.95Nb1.01O3) have been examined by powder x-ray diffraction for the occurrence of niobium antisite defects (niobium on lithium sites). Contrary to current thinking, we have found no evidence for the occurrence of high concentrations of such defects, which also require the presence of Nb site vacancies. Rather, it was found that the number of antisite defects is close to the minimum that is required to sustain charge neutrality in a model of the type ([Li1−xNbx/5][Nb]O3), where the Nb site is fully occupied.

Notes: The crystallography and microstructure of an antiferroelectric ceramic of approximate composition Pb0.97La0.02(Zr0.65Sn0.25Ti0.10)O3 have been examined. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray, and neutron powder studies were carried out. The cell is metrically tetragonal with a c/a ratio of 0.993 when indexed to the parent cubic perovskite cell. The structure exhibits both a commensurate supercell, believed to be associated with oxygen octahedra distortions, and an incommensurate modulation. The different crystallographic variants of the tetragonal antiferroelectric phase gave rise to a hierarchy of domain structures. Charging of TEM specimens having an incomplete conductive coating caused domain migration.

Notes: A vibration control case study is described which demonstrates the application of magnetostrictive (Terfenol-D) actuators. The magnetomechanical properties of the material suggests that when incorporated in devices for applications a nonlinear response will result. This case study compares the performance of two kinds of control strategy (both discrete), a conventional proportional and integral (PI) algorithm and a variable structure algorithm (DVSC) in both servo and cancellation/regulation roles. Both strategies were implemented on an INMOS transputer based microcontroller with a sampling period of 300 μs. The results presented show that the control behavior of the DVSC strategy offers significant advantages over the PI strategy when controlling actuators with nonlinear characteristics, i.e., the rejection of a 5 Hz disturbance with a gain of −36 dB compared to a gain of −15 dB when using the PI strategy.

Notes: Large area (0.8 cm2) single-crystal films ∼1 μm thick of Ni–Cu alloy have been electrodeposited directly onto (100) n-type GaAs. The epitaxial relationship was found to be (001) Ni–Cu parallel to (001) GaAs and [110] Ni–Cu parallel to [100] GaAs. Magnetic measurements show the films to be ferromagnetic. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract In 1970, Perutz tried to put the allosteric mechanism of hemoglobin, proposed by Monod, Wyman and Changeux in 1965, on a stereochemical basis. He interpreted their two-state model in terms of an equilibrium between two alternative structures, a tense one (T) with low oxygen affinity, constrained by salt-bridges between the C-termini of the four subunits, and a relaxed one (R) lacking these bridges. The equilibrium was thought to be governed primarily by the positions of the iron atoms relative to the porphyrin: out-of-plane in five-coordinated, high-spin deoxyhemoglobin, and in-plane in six-coordinated, low-spin oxyhemoglobin. The tension exercised by the salt-bridges in the T-structure was to be transmitted to the heme-linked histidines and to restrain the movement of the iron atoms into the porphyrin plane that is necessary for oxygen binding. At the beta-hemes, the distal valine and histidine block the oxygen-combining site in the T-structure; its tension was thought to strengthen that blockage. Finally, Perutz attributed the linearity of proton release with early oxygen uptake to the sequential rupture of salt-bridges in the T-structure and to the accompanying drop in pKa of the weak bases that form part of them. Almost every feature of this mechanism has been disputed, but evidence that has come to light more than 25 years later now shows it to have been substantially correct. That new evidence is reviewed below.

Notes: Summary. Ultrasound brain scans were obtained daily for the first 5 days after birth, on day 7 and then weekly until discharge from hospital in 86 babies during a 12-month period. The babies weighed 〈1501 g or were 〈34 weeks gestational age. Fifty-one (59%) had normal scans. 34 (40%) developed periventricular haemorrhage, and seven (8%) developed periventricular cysts (associated with periventricular haemorrhage in six). Factors associated with periventricular haemorrhage were perinatal hypoxia, acidosis, hypercapnia and hypoxia after birth. Babies who developed periventricular cysts (periventricular leukomalacia) were more likely to have been hypoxic at birth and in four of the seven there had been a maternal antepartum haemorrhage. The association of perinatal hypoxia with periventricular haemorrhage and leukomalacia suggests that intraparturm events may predispose to the onset of these lesions which then develop postnatally. Prevention of perinatal hypoxia may play an important role in diminishing the disability caused by these conditions.

Notes: This paper looks at a number of others which bear on the interface between Corporate Strategy and R&D Planning to see if a more systematic approach can suggest a sequence to be followed so that Corporate Strategy can be seen as a source of ideas for R&D.The purpose of R&D is defined in terms of contributing to the competitiveness of the Company or Business Unit being served. The areas of competition or threats from the external environment are then explored using a model taken from Porter's book ‘Competitive Strategy’. Each area of competition is considered in turn and strategies identified which might enable the company to maintain its competitive edge. Sub-objectives for the R&D function can then be determined allocating resources and time for their completion. It is the performance of the R&D function inj fulfilling these sub-objectives which can be the basis of measuring the effectiveness of R&D.
