Notizen: Summary Cell suspensions prepared by enzymatic dispersion of whole rat adrenal glands for the purpose of studying adrenocortical cells were found to contain chromaffin cells even though they are commonly thought to not survive in such preparations. These cells fluoresced when treated with methods specific for catecholamines. The fluorescent cells persisted in the cultures of “cortical” cells, took on the morphology of neurons in the cultures, maintained their specific catecholamine fluorescence in long-term cultures, and ultrastructurally were identical to chromaffin cells.

Notizen: The ultrastructure of Kupffer cells of canine liver has been studied and described. Kupffer cell nuclei were elongated and irregular in shape having a prominent double nuclear envelope containing scattered ribosomes on the outer membrane. Mitochondria were small, relatively scarce, and contained few mitochondrial granules. Elements of endoplasmic reticulum were scarce and highly irregular in form. In general, the cytoplasm was less dense than hepatocytes and contained fewer organelles which were less compactly arranged than in hepatocytes. Microbodies were not observed in any of the Kupffer cells studied. The cytoplasm contained various numbers of large phagosomes but consistently contained numerous dense cytosomes of various sizes. The most striking finding was that many cytosomes and phagosomes contained large numbers of short microtubules approximately 350 Å in diameter which were arranged in clusters and were associated with membanes.

Notizen: The effects of thyroxine and ACTH on the ultrastructure of cells of the adrenal zona fasciculata were studied by morphometric analysis and compared by two-way analysis of variance. The results indicate that the effects of thyroxine and ACTH are different and independent. The statistically significant differences in effect of thyroxine and ACTH are: thyroxine causes an increase in the volume fraction of mitochondria and a decrease in the volume fraction of endoplasmic reticulum independent of ACTH; thyroxine causes a decrease in surface density of mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum in the absence of ACTH, but in the presence of ACTH this effect is moderated by an interaction of thyroxine and ACTH. There were no statistically significant effects of either thyroxine or ACTH on volume fraction or surface density of liposomes.
