Notizen: The concentration of African cassava mosaic virus (ACMV) was assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in relation to symptom severity among resistant, moderately resistant and susceptible cassava genotypes. Resistant genotype NR 8083 had significantly lower symptom severity scores (P 〈 0·05) than the susceptible genotype TMS 91934, but the two genotypes contained similar levels of virus concentration. The moderately resistant genotypes TMS 30572 and NR 8082 expressed significantly lower symptom severities (P 〈 0·05) than the susceptible genotypes TMS 91934 and TME 117, but they contained significantly higher virus concentrations (P 〈 0·05) than TMS 91934 and similar virus concentration as in TME 117. However, two other resistant genotypes, TME 1 and TME 8, had low symptom severity scores and virus concentrations. There was significant interaction (P ≤ 0·05) between cropping season and virus concentration in all the genotypes except TMS 30572. The resistant and moderately resistant genotypes that had high virus concentrations sustained storage root yield losses. The severity of symptoms expressed was not necessarily a reflection of the virus concentration in some of the genotypes. In addition to the use of symptom severity scores to group genotypes into resistant classes, it is recommended that virus concentration should also be considered. Genotypes displaying mild symptoms, but with high levels of virus accumulation, could be an important source of inoculum in the spread of ACMV by the whitefly vectors. This suggests that each genotype should be tested for virus accumulation prior to its release to the farmers.

Notizen: Summary Gene complementarity among various sources of resistance to greenbug biotype E was assessed. Analysis of the F2 generation of crosses between susceptible and resistant parents (mating 1) and among sources of resistance (mating 2) suggested that resistance in sorghum to greenbug biotype E was complexly inherited and, to some extent, dependent on the nature of both the resistant and susceptible parents. Positive transgressive segregation in the F2 generations of both matings was found to be due to effective plus factors, contributed by both parents in a cross, which complemented each other. The number of plus factors ranged from one to two in the susceptible parents and from two to five in the resistant parents of mating 1, and from one to five in the parents of mating 2. The consistently significant reciprocal effects shown by Sarvasi and PI264453 indicated that these sources had major factors for resistance in their cytoplasms, which were expressed in all their crosses. The results from this study indicated that the sources of resistance complemented each other to give increased number of F2 segregates with increased resistance. Thus, it should be possible to increase and diversify resistance of sorghum to greenbug biotype E by accumulating different, effective plus factors from various sources through recurrent selection.

Notizen: Theoretical models of gas diffusion and permeation in microporous molecularsieve membranes are presented. The effect of the adsorbed diffusant on the total transmembrane flow is insignificant for permanent gases. For highly adsorbable gases the effect of the adsorbed molecules on the total transmembrane flux may be high at low temperatures. The activation energy of diffusion increases when the kinetic diameter of the diffusant increases. The activation energy of gas diffusion compares well with the values calculated based on the Lennard-Jones potential. Maximum possible permeability coefficients calculated for He in the molecular-sieve membranes do not exceed ˜30,000 Barrer at room temperature. The experimentally observed value for He permeability is ˜1,000 Barrer (T=30°C) because of the high tortuosity (τ≍ 25) and low porosity (θ = 0.22) of the membrane porous structure.

Notizen: Simple thermal resistance models of packed-bed heat transfer can be used to derive predictive formulas for the effective axial and radial thermal conductivities and apparent wall heat transfer coefficient. In particular, the behavior of the heat transfer parameters over the entire range of Reynolds number can be explained by considering the two asymptotic cases of low Re (solid phase dominant) and high Re (fluid phase dominant).

Notizen: A general theory is presented for the prediction of effective axial conductivity and overall radial heat transfer coefficient for fluid flow through packed beds, under either transient or steady state conditions. The parameters to be used in each case may be quite different, depending on the dominant phase for heat transfer. The theory unifies all previous results and explains conflicting conclusions arrived at by different workers. The ability of a pseudohomogeneous model to reproduce packedbed transients is shown to depend upon the choice of effective parameters.
