Notizen: Abstract The tensile properties and fatigue behaviour of three solution-treated Fe-29 Mn-9 Al-C (wt%) alloys having various carbon contents leading to different volume fractions of austenite and ferrite phases were investigated. The carbon contents were 1.06%, 0.60% and 0.26%, respectively and the corresponding volume fractions of austenite were 100%, 90% and 45%, respectively. The alloy having 1.06% carbon possessed the best tensile properties but its fatigue behaviour was only comparable to the other two alloys with lower carbon contents. The alloy having 0.60% carbon possessed the lowest yield strength, but its fatigue life was slightly better than other two alloys. The alloy having 0.26% C possessed lowest elongation and medium strength, and its fatigue life was comparable to the other two alloys. Their tensile properties and fatigue behaviour were explained in terms of crack initiation, crack propagation, grain size, constituent arrangement and constituent fraction.

Notizen: Abstract The correlations of the work-hardening exponent,n, with quenching temperature, martensite volume-fraction (MVF) and solute concentration in ferrite are discussed and derived for dual-phase steel. The flow stress of dual-phase steel at low strain is suggested to be expressed by the combination of the terms due to plastic deformation in ferrite and elastic deformation of martensite. Previous experimental results are compared with the behaviour suggested by this theoretical work. In addition, an expression for the work hardening exponents at moderate strains and at the onset of necking are also theoretically suggested.

Notizen: Abstract The effect of pre-strain on the strain-induced martensitic transformation of an Fe-12Cr-23Mn austenitic steel has been investigated through transmission electron microscopy and X-ray analysis. Pre-strain was performed either at room temperature or at 200° C. Final strain was carried out at liquid-nitrogen temperature. Theε phase was shown to form on {1 1 1} planes of the austenite matrix predominantly by overlapping of stacking faults. The martensite transformation sequence wasγ →ε →α. Nucleation of theα phase mainly occurred at intersections ofε bands. Austenite stability was shown to increase by pre-strain at 25° C or 200° C. Pre-strain at 200° C has a greater effect on austenite stability than does pre-strain at 25° C. The mechanism was discussed in terms of martensite transformation rate and various substructures introduced during straining. Work hardening was shown to depend on the degree of pre-strain and final strain. The correlation between work hardening and substructures introduced during straining was examined.

Notizen: Abstract The effects of TAHA treatments including pre-ageing, plastic deformation and final-ageing on the fatigue life of a 7075 Al-Zn-Mg alloy were investigated. Pre-ageing was carried out at 100° C (TAHA1) and room temperature (TAHA2). Experimental results indicated that the improvement in fatigue life due to TAHA1 and TAHA2 was at least 19.5 and 26%, respectively, when compared to the conventional T-6 treatment. Scanning electron microscopy showed that fracture features such as dimple distribution, fatigue striation, tearing ridge and platelets could be correlated with fatigue behaviour. The correlation between the peak fatigue life, peak elongation, residual stress and substructure, such as subcell and precipitate, is also discussed.

Notizen: Abstract High-purity Al-Zn-Mg alloy was thermomechanically treated. The process included solution treatment, pre-ageing, cold-working by rolling and final ageing. Pre-ageing was carried out at 100°C (TAHA1) and room temperature (TAHA2). Experimental results indicated that the TAHA1 process improved the tensile strength significantly while the TAHA2 process improved the fatigue life more substantially. Fatigue crack initiation sites were examined carefully by scanning electron microscopy. A correlation between fatigue crack initiation, fatigue striation, tearing ridge, dimple distribution and fatigue life was observed. The experimental results are discussed in terms of substructure and are also compared with the tensile and fatigue properties of a thermomechanically treated 7075 Al-Zn-Mg alloy which were previously reported by one of the authors.

Notizen: Abstract The effects of pre-ageing on the tensile properties of a thermomechanically treated 6201 aluminium alloy were examined. It was found that the pre-ageing effects can be either beneficial or detrimental depending on the amount of cold work applied prior to final ageing. The pre-ageing performed was at 135° C for 30 min. The final ageing was at 140° C for various time periods. Pre-ageing combined with 60% cold work improves the tensile properties. However, pre-ageing combined with 80% cold work shows a detrimental effect on the tensile properties of 6201 alloy. The mechanisms are explained in terms of transmission electron microscopy.

Notizen: Abstract Low cycle fatigue studies have been carried out on 2 wt% Mn, 2 wt% Si and 0.1 wt% C steels with dual-phase and tempered martensitic structures. Fatigue crack initiation and propagation were investigated using scanning electron microscopy as well as optical microscopy. In addition, taper-section and cross-section techniques were also performed for more detail studies on the correlation of crack initiation with the internal microstructures of the testing samples. Internal microstructures were also investigated on the dual-phase steel sample before and after fatigue fracture by transmission electron microscopy.

Notizen: Abstract The effect of nitrogen and nickel on the austenite stability and the structural changes as a result of cold work of an Fe-12Cr-23Mn alloy steel has been examined by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray analysis. Prestrain was performed either at room temperature or at 200° C. Final strain was carried out at liquid nitrogen temperature. The volume fraction of strain-induced martensite decreased by 40% and 12% due to the addition of 2.43% Ni and 0.11% N, respectively, despite whether prestrain was performed or not. The mechanisms are discussed in terms of the ɛ phase, stacking faults, dislocation cells and dislocation tangles induced by prestrain and final strain.

Notizen: The resistive transitions and the temperature dependence of the current-voltage (I–V) characteristics of Nb-powder bulk granular superconductors near the transition temperature are investigated. Experimental results on the resistive transition are explained in terms of Anderson's theory as thermally activated phase slippage, and the I–V characteristics are compared with the effects of thermal fluctuations on an array of Josephson weak links in a simplified model based on Ambegaokar and Halperin's theory of thermal noise in the Josephson effect.
