Notizen: Granulite facies anorthosites on Holsenøy Island in the Bergen Arcs region of western Norway are transected by shear zones 0.1–100 m wide characterized by eclogite facies assemblages. Eclogite formation is related to influx of fluid along the shears at temperatures of c. 700d̀C and pressures in excess of 1.7 GPa. Combined carbon and nitrogen stable isotope, 40Ar/36Ar, trace-element and petrological data have been used to determine the nature and distribution of fluids across the anorthosite-eclogite transition.A metre-wide drilled section traverses the eclogitic centre of the shear into undeformed granulite facies garnet-clinopyroxene anorthosite. Clinozoisite occurs along grain boundaries and microcracks in undeformed anorthosite up to 1 m from the centre of the shear and clinozoisite increases in abundance as the edge of the shear zone is approached. The eclogite-granulite transition, marked by the appearance of sodic pyroxene and loss of albite, occurs within the most highly sheared section of the traverse. The jadeite-in reaction coincides with increased paragonite activity in mica. The separation between paragonite and clinozoisite reaction fronts can be semiquantitatively modelled assuming advective fluid flow perpendicular to the shear zone. The inner section of the traverse (0.25 m wide) is marked by retrogressive replacement of omphacite by plagioclase + paragonite accompanied by veins of quartz-phengite-plagioclase.C-N-Ar characteristics of fluid inclusions in garnet show that fluids associated with precursor granulite, eclogite and retrogressed eclogite are isotopically distinct. The granulite-eclogite transition coincides with a marked change in CO2 abundance and δ13C (〈36ppm, δ13C=-2% in the granulite; 〈180 ppm, δ13C=-10% in the eclogite). The distribution of Ar indicates mixing between influxed fluid (40Ar/36Ar 〉 25 times 103) and pre-existing Ar in the granulite (40Ar/36Ar 〈 8 times 103). δ15N values decrease from +6% in the anorthosite to +3% within the eclogite shear. The central zone of retrogressed eclogite post-dates shearing and is characterised by substantial enrichment of Si, K, Ba and Rb. Fluids are CO2-rich (δ13C ∼ -5%) with variable N2 and Ar abundances and isotopic compositions. Both Ar and H2O have penetrated the underformed granulite fabric more than 0.5m beyond the granulite/eclogite transition during eclogite formation. Argon isotopes show a mixing profile consistent with diffusion through an interconnecting H2O-rich fluid network. In contrast, a carbon-isotope front coincides with the deformation boundary layer, indicating that the underformed anorthosite was impervious to CO2-rich fluids. This is consistent with the high dihedral angle of carbonic fluids, and may be interpreted in terms of evolving fluid compositions within the shear zone.

Notizen: Two samples from the Eclogite Micaschist Complex (EMC) and the Seconda Zona Diorito–Kinzigitica (IIDK) of the Sesia Zone have been studied using a high-spatial resolution laser probe 40Ar/39Ar technique with the aim of investigating the complexities of argon behaviour in metamorphic rocks and comparing their thermal histories. Data from a single large phengite grain from the EMC show a range of ages from mid-Jurassic to Upper Cretaceous. These ‘apparent age’ variations are spatially related to both locationwithin the grain and to intragrain microstructure. Modelling of the data shows that the profile formedby the diffusion of an excess argon component into the grain, parallel to the mica cleavage. Profileasymmetry is explained by temporal variations in microstructural development enabling excess argon toenter the grain at different times in different places. The temperatures of the initiation of deformationand the possible time-scales for the deformation can be calculated as a function of cooling rate. Allestimates suggest deformation at greenschist facies, in accord with the observed retrograde mineral assemblage. Absolute temperature estimates for deformation vary by less than 22 °C for different cooling ratesof 10 and 30 °C Ma−1 but vary by 80 °C with different estimates of diffusion parameters. The durationof deformation was for at least 2 Ma at 10 °C Ma−1 or 0.7 Ma at 30 °C Ma−1. Biotites from the IIDKsample record a Permian to Upper Cretaceous age range that correlates with grain size, the smallestgrain sizes yielding the youngest ages. This relationship is best explained by a partial resetting of biotitesduring an Alpine thermal event initiated not more than 70 Ma ago. Modelling of these data suggest thatthe sample never exceeded 300 °C during the Alpine. The profoundly different thermal histories of thetwo units—the EMC recrystallized at 550 °C whilst the IIDK remained below 300 °C—suggests thatthey may not have been juxtaposed until much later than the eclogite facies metamorphism.

Notizen: The north-west Turkish blueschists represent a subducted passive continental margin sequence dominated by metaclastic rocks and marble. The depositional age of the blueschist protoliths are probably Palaeozoic to Mesozoic, while the age of the high-pressure/low-temperature metamorphism is Late Cretaceous. Blueschists are tectonically overlain by a volcanosedimentary sequence made up of accreted oceanic crustal material that locally shows incipient blueschist metamorphism and by spinel peridotite slices. The metaclastic rocks with regional jadeite and glaucophane, which comprise the lower part of the blueschist unit, make up an over 1000-m-thick coherent sequence in the Kocasu region of north-west Turkey. Rare metabasic horizons in the upper parts of the metaclastic sequence with sodic amphibole + Iawsonite but no garnet indicate lawsonite blueschist facies metamorphism. The blueschist metaclastics in the Kocasu region are practically free of calcium and ferric iron and closely approximate the NFMASH system in bulk composition. Two low-variance mineral assemblages (with quartz and phengite) are jadeite + glaucophane + chlorite + paragonite and chloritoid + glaucophane + paragonite. The metaclastics comprise up to several-metres-thick layers of jadeite schist with quartz, phengite and nearly 100 mol% jadeite. Phase relations in the metaclastics show that the chloritoid + glaucophane assemblage, even in Fe2+-rich compositions, is stable in the jadeite stability field. In the NFASH system the above assemblage without the accompanying garnet has a narrow thermal stability field.Mineral equilibria in the metaclastics involving chloritoid, glaucophane, jadeite, paragonite and chlorite indicate metamorphic P-T conditions of 20 ± 2 kbar and 430 ± 30 d̀ C, yielding geothermal gradients close to 5d̀ C km-1, one of the lowest geotherms recorded. Blueschists in the Kocasu region, which have been buried to 70 km depth, are tectonically overlain by the volcanosedimentary sequence and by peridotite buried not deeper than 30 km.Phengites from two jadeite schists were dated by Ar/Ar laser probe; they give an age of 88.5 ± 0.5 Ma, interpreted as the age of metamorphism. Blueschists and the overlying peridotite bodies are intruded by 48-53-Ma-old granodiorite bodies that were emplaced at 10 km depth. This suggests that the exhumation of blueschists by underplating of cold continental crust, and normal faulting at the blueschist-peridotite, interface occurred during the Late Cretaceous to Palaeocene (88-53 Ma).

Notizen: Abstract: Inorganic phosphate (Pi) plays a vital role in intracellular energy metabolism. Its many effects include stimulation of glucose use, enhancement of high-energy phosphate concentrations, and modulation of cytosolic free [Ca2+]. Cultured fetal rat cortical neurons constitutively import Pi, and cytosolic levels positively correlate with [ATP], [NADPH], and energy charge. In the present study, we demonstrate that the concentration of intracellular Pi is an important determinant of acute neuronal survival after an excitotoxic or oxidative insult to cultured fetal rat cortical neurons. Extracellular Pi dose-dependently enhanced survival of cortical neurons after exposure to NMDA at early (≤6 h) time points after termination of the insult. Pi similarly increased neuronal survival after exposure to kainic acid or H2O2. Pi-exposed neurons had higher basal intracellular [Pi], [ATP], and [GSH], and slightly lower cytosolic free [Ca2+], compared with Pi-deprived neurons. Pi-exposed neurons maintained increased [ATP] after exposure to NMDA and displayed reduced formation of reactive oxygen species after exposure to kainic acid or H2O2, compared with Pi-deprived neurons. These findings demonstrate that changes in extracellular and intracellular Pi can affect neuronal survival after excitotoxic or oxidative insults.

Notizen: We present a study of the abstraction and exchange reactions of NH+3 with D2 yielding NH3D++D and NH2D++HD, respectively. The translational energy of these experiments was fixed at 0.50 eV, while the vibrational energy of the ammonia cations was selected at values between 3.3 and 4.9 eV by a charge exchange technique. The flux distributions for the two distinct reaction products were quite different, indicating different precursors to their formation. The abstraction reaction products were backward scattered in the center-of-mass reference frame, while sharp forward–backward scattering of the exchange products suggested the participation of a transient intermediate living a fraction of a rotational period. The angular distribution for exchange became more symmetric about 90° with decreasing reagent vibrational energy, further supporting the participation of an intermediate complex. The product kinetic energy distributions for both processes broadened with increasing vibrational energy. This observation is consistent with partitioning of the total available energy of the incoming reagents into exchange product degrees of freedom as one would expect for a transient complex. The participation of the vibrational energy in the abstraction process is consistent with vibration–translation energy transfer from the ν2 bending mode of NH+3 to relative translation of the products.

Notizen: Abstract Accurate assessment of dietary intake among preschool-aged children is important for clinical care and research, for nutrition monitoring and evaluating nutrition interventions, and for epidemiologic research. We identified 25 studies published between January 1976 and August 2000 that evaluated the validity of food recalls (n = 12), food frequency questionnaires (n = 9), food records (n = 2), or other methods (n = 2). We identified four studies that evaluated the reproducibility of food frequency questionnaires. Validity studies varied in validation standard and study design, making comparisons between studies difficult. In general, food frequency questionnaires overestimated total energy intake and were better at ranking, than quantifying, nutrient intake. Compared with the validation standard, food recalls both overestimated and underestimated energy intake. When choosing a method to estimate diet, both purpose of the assessment and practicality of the method must be considered, in addition to the validity and reproducibility reported in the scientific literature.

Notizen: A virus having tubular particles (124, 142 and 167 nm) was manually transmitted from and to Anthoxanthum odoratum (sweet vernal grass). Other experimental hosts were Chenopodium quinoa, C. amaranticolor, Zea mays, Avena sativa and Hordeum vulgare (barley); winter cultivars of barley were more often infected than spring cultivars. In tests which simulated mechanical injury, the virus was transmitted from infected to healthy A. odoratum but not to healthy barley. The virus particles, which were seen as aggregates in the cytoplasm of A. odoratum leaf cells and in anther walls, reacted strongly in immunosorbent electron microscopy tests with antisera to strains of barley stripe mosaic hordeivirus. Nevertheless, the virus could be distinguished from the Type strain of barley stripe mosaic virus by reciprocal serological tests and by symptoms in infected barley cv. Black Hulless. Using an antiserum produced against the virus, a survey of A. odoratum in the field revealed one of 72 tested plants to be naturally infected. The virus is probably that described by Catherall & Chamberlain (1980) and named anthoxanthum latent blanching virus.
