Notizen: Abstract The possible cardiovascular pharmacodynamic interactions at rest and during exercise of combining oral flosequinan (100 mg) with xamoterol (200 mg) was investigated in a four-way randomised double-blind placebo-controlled crossover trial in eight healthy male volunteers. Xamoterol was better tolerated than flosequinan. The most common adverse events were mild to moderate headache and facial flushing. One volunteer developed headache and vomiting following flosequinan treatment and was replaced. Compared to placebo, at supine rest, flosequinan significantly increased heart rate (HR) by 5 beats·minv1, but had no effect on cardiac output (CO), stroke volume (SV) and mean blood pressure (MBP). Xamoterol significantly increased CO by 1.5 l·min-1, HR (5 beats·min-1) and MBP (6 mmHg) but not SV. The combined treatment (flosequinan + xamoterol) significantly increased CO (1.71·min-1) and HR (10 beats·min-1), but had no effect on SV and MBP. During exercise, flosequinan had no significant effect on any variable compared to placebo. Both xamoterol and combined treatment reduced the increase in CO (-4.61·min-1 after xamoterol and -3.41·min-1 after combined treatment vs. 0.1 l·min-1 after placebo), but had no effect on other variables. The effect of the combined treatment on each haemodynamic variable were no more than the anticipated additive effects of the two drugs. Thus, no cardiovascular pharmacodynamic interaction was found between flosequinan and xamoterol in healthy volunteers.

Notizen: Abstract A process control chart is proposed for DC plasma spraying process based on the in-flight simulation of the injected states of the particles determined by computational fluid dynamics analysis (via FLUENT V4.3). The chart consists of five regions, i.e., the unmelted, melted, vaporized, escaped, and rebounded, which represent the various states of the particles at impact on the substrate. The X and Y axes of the chart are particle entry conditions, i.e., diameter (ranging from 20 to 100 μm) and injection velocity (between 10 to 50 m/s), respectively. The regions indicate the fate of the particle on impact. A grid-array of (14×11) entry conditions is simulated in developing the chart. The proposed chart is aimed at providing a general guideline for plasma spraying process in achieving a thoroughly melted particle on arrival at the substrate to be coated.

Notizen: Abstract This paper describes the application of the traditional four-point bending technique to conduct strain gage performance tests at moderate temperatures. The tests measure the apparent strain, linearity, drift, creep and hysteresis behavior to ascertain the reliability of strain gages to be used in the testing of experimental cylindrical vessels subjected to thermal loading. The four-point bending rig was designed to take advantage of the advances in personal computer datalogging and graphical processing software. The test rig is designed to provide a thermal barrier to minimize the heat losses and thermal isolation of the test beam while maintaining structural continuity. A low wattage and lightweight electric foil heater incorporating a precise temperature controller minimizes weight and enhances temperature stability. Gage performance data on five “candidate” strain gages at temperatures ranging from ambient to 215°C (419°F) are presented, and the evaluation procedure is outlined. The strain gage with the most acceptable performance was identified within the validity limits from ambient to a temperature of 215°C and from zero to a maximum strain of 1000 μ∈.
