Summary In the method given byLeipert for the determination of iodine in biological material, the blank values, which ordinarily are often observed, can be completely avoided by the use of a bromine-glacial acetic acid solution as absorbent for the iodine that has been distilled over, and by heating the bromine solution, which has been decolorized with formic acid, before theWinkler titration. In this way it is then possible to determine, with adequate accuracy, quantities of iodine even as little as about 1γ. This is especially true if the iodine titrated is made 36 times as large by the familiar method. The steam distillation under reduced pressure can be replaced by passing carbon dioxide or nitrogen through the boiling reduced solution of the ash in order to drive the iodine into the receiver. This procedure makes it possible to simplify the apparatus.
