    Notes: Abstract Mesoscale models using a non-local K-scheme for parameterization of boundary-layer processes require an estimate of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) height z i at all times. In this paper, two-dimensional sea-breeze experiments are carried out to evaluate three different formulations for the advective contribution in the z i prognostic equation of Deardorff (1974). Poor representation of the thermal internal boundary layer in the sea breeze is obtained when z i is advected by the wind at level z i . However, significantly better results are produced if the mean PBL wind is used for the advecting velocity, or if z i is determined simply by checking for the first ‘sufficiently’ stable layer above the ground. A Lagrangian particle model is used to demonstrate the effect of each formulation on plume dispersion by the sea breeze.

    Notes: An increasing amount of evidence is accumulating to support the proposal that steroidogenesis can occur by a sesterterpene pathway as well as the cholesterol pathway. Key intermediates on the sesterterpene pathway are 23,24-dinor-5-cholen-3β-ol (guneribol) and some of its metabolites, e.g. 23,24-dinor-4-cholen-3-one (guneribone). It has been reported that these intermediates are biosynthesized and converted to steroid hormones by a range of endocrine tissues in vitro. Monitoring the pentafluorobenzyloxime derivatives by negative ion chemical ionization mass spectrometry in the electron capture mode provided evidence for the presence of guneribone in extracts of bovine testicular and human adrenal tumour tissue. Complementary evidence was obtained from gas chromatographic/tandem mass spectrometric data generated on a triple-quadrupole instrument by monitoring daughter ions (in the multiple ion detection, MID mode) of the molecular anion of derivatized guneribone in both standards and tissue extracts. The present findings that sesterterpene pathway intermediates are present as endogenous compounds in tissue extracts, together with the previously reported radiochemical data, give further support to the sesterterpene pathway hypothesis.

    Notes: Summary In this paper we show using a three-dimensional mesoscale model that terrain forcing has a major effect on the observed snowfall distribution under upslope conditions in northeast Colorado. Two upslope snowstorms (in 1982 and in 1985) were simulated. The effects are strongly dependent on the orientation of the prevailing wind with respect to terrain orientation. It is suggested that an approach such as discussed in this paper could be used in a forecasting mode, combined with traditional tools such as the NWS Limited Fine Mesh Model (LFM) or Nested Grid Model (NGM). In both of these cases the LFM correctly predicted the development of these storms. However, due to its much coarser resolution it was unable to resolve the terrain-forced variation evident in the simulations presented here.
