    Notes: The thermal diffusivity of fluid oxygen in the diamond-anvil cell has been measured from 1 to 12.6 GPa and 25 to 300 °C. These constitute the first experimental measurements of thermal transport properties of simple fluids above 1 GPa. Diffusivities are found to rise sharply from a minimum at intermediate pressures and then to level off at ∼6 GPa. Thermal conductivities derived from these measurements do not vary as (square root of)T, rather the excess conductivities are approximately independent of temperature. The diffusivities of nitrogen, previously measured to 1 GPa, closely match those of oxygen when scaled as suggested by a simple, corresponding states theory. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The speed of sound in supercritical, fluid oxygen has been measured up to the freezing points of 6.0 GPa at 30 °C and 10.5 GPa at 200 °C. The oxygen was contained in a diamond–anvil cell and pressure was measured on the ruby scale. The measurements were used to establish an equation of state. Additionally, the fluid-β phase boundary was determined between 15 and 180 °C to a precision of 0.02 GPa. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An experimental approach to the study of thermal transport in the diamond-anvil high pressure cell is described and the elements of the thermal diffusivity tensor of β-oxygen are reported to a pressure of 9 GPa. The anisotropy in the thermal conductivity is found to be opposite in sense to that in the velocity of acoustic waves. Results are interpreted in terms of a lattice dynamical model in which the strong interactions between an atom and its first-, second-, and third-nearest neighbors are treated in tensorial form with parameters evaluated directly from experiment. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report the second of a series of experiments on selective photoionization of mercury isotopes in which we show that radioactive atoms containing either isomeric form of the radionuclide 197Hg can be selectively ionized in the presence of natural mercury isotopes by doubly resonant three-step laser photoionization, and discuss its implications as a test case for nuclear-isomer separation.

    Notes: We have studied the line shapes of vibronic transitions in the phosphorescence spectrum of the one-dimensional triplet exciton of TCB between 4.2 and 0.4 K. It is shown that also the vibrational excitons are highly one dimensional. This finding is confirmed by time-resolved emission spectra. Observed vibron bandwidths vary up to 15 cm−1 with k=0 either at the top or at the bottom of the band. In contrast to the fundamental vibrations, no overtones or combination bands give evidence of a well-defined one-dimensional quasimomentum.

    Notes: C˜→A˜ emission spectra of the water molecule have been observed following two-photon excitation to various vibrational levels of the C˜(1B1) electronic state. Photodissociation dynamics on the A˜(1B1) state potential energy surface were probed through the C˜→A˜ emission spectra. The different spectra correspond to photodissociation trajectories in the A˜ state starting with a variety of initial conditions. Time-dependent quantum mechanical simulations of the emission spectra show good agreement with the experimental data and provide further insight into the dissociation dynamics on the A˜ state surface.

    Notes: Spectra of the lowest 1B2 state of H2O and D2O have been recorded. The state is linear in its equilibrium geometry and has a bond length of 1.02 A(ring). The spectra exhibit vibrational bending progressions and are rotationally resolved. They were recorded from energies of 80 000 to 90 000 cm−1 via two-photon, laser-induced flourescence (LIF) and 2+1 multiphoton ionization (MPI).

    Notes: The six independent elastic constants of β-oxygen have been measured over a pressure range extending from 6.0 to 9.5 GPa. Neither central forces between individual atoms, nor central forces augmented by the interactions between axial distributions of charge can give a reasonable account of the data. Force constant matrices were found which can account for the elastic data and the previously observed librational frequency. These matrices are based on general, short range forces with many-body interactions only among atoms contained in the same pair of molecules. Vibrational densities of states, distributions of individual-mode Grüneisen parameters, heat capacities, and the equation of state derived from the pressure dependence of the elastic moduli are presented.

    Notes: Abstract The elastic, thermodynamic, and transport properties of crystals and fluids at high temperature and pressure play a central role in the earth and planetary sciences as well as in a variety of technologies. These properties also constitute a principal experimental constraint on the description of intermolecular interactions at short distances. Aspects of "impulsive stimulated scattering," when adapted to measurements in the diamond-anvil high-pressure cell, provide an approach to the determination of a subset of equilibrium and dynamic properties at high density.
