Notes: The frequency of clinical infection of the vaginal vault after hysterectomy was compared in two groups of patients, a study group treated with povidone-iodine vaginal pessaries for 36 hours pre-operatively and prepared with povidone-iodine preparations at the time of operation, and a control group given no preliminary treatment and prepared with chlorhexidine preparations at the time of operation. No significant difference was demonstrated between the two groups. Vault infection occurred in 32 per cent of the entire series of patients (severe infection 14 per cent) and infection correlated with the presence of pathogenic bacteria in the vagina. No significant differences in bacterial colonisation of the vagina between the two groups were demonstrated at any stage of the investigation. Preliminary preparation of the vagina with povidone-iodine pessaries is not recommended.

Notes: Arrack is a potable spirit produced in Sri Lanka by fermenting sap usually obtained from the coconut palm. In this study the major volatiles present in several commercial samples of arrack are found to be similar to those in other potable spirits although their individual concentrations differ. The variation between brands is attributed to differences in the quality of the fermented toddy used. This is thought to result from the uncontrolled and mixed nature of the fermentation. Ethyl lactate was found in all samples analysed and it is thought that production of this ester is a characteristic feature of mixed lacticalcoholic fermentations.

Notes: The development of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for nisin using polyclonal antiserum is described. The method has a limit of detection of 1.9 X 10−2 i.u. ml−1 and correlates well with the bioassay. Its use in the analysis of commercial processed cheese samples is described and the results obtained compared with those from the bioassay.

Notes: Lactic fermented fish products are common in South East Asia. The composition and quality of the products vary considerably since they are usually produced on a small scale and the fermentation of the fish-salt-carbohydrate mixtures depends on the natural microflora. A minced fish-salt-glucose system was used to evaluate the factors that favour a rapid lactic fermentation. Studies with Lactobacillus plantarum and Pediococcus pentosaceus indicated that fermentation rates increase in the range 0–5% w/w of glucose or sucrose, whereas increasing the salt concentration from 0 to 6% slows the rate of pH decrease. Conditions of 1% salt and 4% glucose were used for subsequent studies. The nature of the gas atmosphere during incubation had little effect on fermentation rate and chemical modification of the initial substrate pH with lactic, acetic or citric acid did not assist the lactic fermentation. Incubation temperatures of 15, 24, 30 and 37°C were evaluated: the lactic acid bacterial count rarely exceeded the total spoiler count by more than ten-fold during the first 2 days (although it subsequently increased). Consequently the objective of reducing the pH to below 4.5 within the first 2 days was difficult to achieve. The use of cooked fish minces gave only slight changes in the fermentation rate.

Notes: The inhibition of Salmonella enteritidis and E. coli by lactic and acetic acids, individually and as equimolar mixtures, was measured. Results confirm that the undissociated acid is the active antimicrobial species. In weakly buffered media an apparently synergistic interaction is observed between the two acids; this is ascribed to the potentiation of acetic acid in the lower pH environment created by the lactic acid. The effect could account for the stability of vegetable fermentations where no starter culture is used and asepsis is not observed.

Notes: Abstract Field experiments carried out on the nocturnal orb weaver spider, Neoscona crucifera (Aranea: Araneidae), found in deciduous hardwood forests suggest that lighted areas where prey densities are elevated provide cues used by the spiders to rank optimal foraging sites. Specifically, experiments were conducted to test whether spiders exhibited preferences for lighted areas where prey densities are high, maximizing their energy intake per unit of foraging time, and minimizing energy expended on web building. Incandescent light bulbs of 4–60 W were used to influence prey densities, and results indicate that when given a choice of brighter versus darker foraging areas, spiders seek lighted areas where prey densities are high. In addition, results support the hypothesis that the size and time of web construction are drastically reduced in brighter situations.

Notes: Abstract In a paper by Adams, Harnad, and Previato, a ring of Poisson commuting functions which produce isospectral Hamiltonian flows on a space of matrices was described and these flows were related to solutions of associated nonlinear partial differential equations (e.g., the Korteweg-deVries, nonlinear Schrödinger, and Boussinesq equations). In this Letter, we give an alternate proof of the Poisson commutativity of this ring of functions by means of a generating function argument.

Notes: Abstract Moment maps are defined from the space of rank-r deformations of a fixedn xn matrixA to the duals $$(\widetilde{g1}(r)^ + )^* , (\widetilde{g1}(n)^ + )^* $$ of the positive half of the loop algebras $$\widetilde{g1}(r),\widetilde{g1}(n)$$ . These maps are shown to give rise to the same invariant manifolds under Hamiltonian flow obtained through the Adler-Kostant-Symes theorem from the rings $$I(\widetilde{g1}(r)^* ),I(\widetilde{g1}(n)^* )$$ of invariant functions. This gives a dual characterization of integrable Hamiltonian systems as isospectral flow in the two loop algebras.

Notes: Abstract The method of constructing spectral Darboux coordinates on finite-dimensional coadjoint orbits induals of loop algebras is applied to the one pole case, where the orbit isidentified with a coadjoint orbit in the dual of a finite-dimensional Liealgebra. The constructions are carried out explicitly when the Lie algebra is sl(2, R),sl(3,R), andso(3, R), and for rank twoorbits is so(n, R). A new feature thatappears is the possibility of identifying spectralDarboux coordinatesassociated to ‘dynamical’ choices of sections of the associatedeigenvector line bundles; i.e.sections that depend on the point within the given orbit.
