    Notes: The Laser Evaporation Ion Source (LEVIS) active lithium ion source has been developed for use on the focusing ion diode operated on the 10 TW Particle Beam Fusion Accelerator-II (PBFA-II) [J. P. VanDevender and D. L. Cook, Science 232, 831 (1986)] at Sandia National Laboratories. The source configuration consists of two laser pulses impinging on a heated (200 °C) thin-film LiAg layer on the anode surface. A short-pulse Nd:YAG laser creates a high-density vapor, which is then ionized by a long-pulse dye laser using the LIBORS (laser ionization based on resonant saturation) ionization method. Small-scale experiments determined that this dual laser-based approach can produce a source plasma of adequate density and confinement for acceleration and transport. Hardware modifications were undertaken to correct problems of premature impedance collapse and lack of beam lithium seen on previous PBFA-II experiments. As much as 85 kJ of Li is measured at the beam focus, but the source may not have been operating in a fully active (i.e., preformed) manner. Focusing performance appears superior to a passive LiF ion source operated on PBFA-II with the same magnetic field topology. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A pulsed Na atomic beam source developed for spectroscopic diagnosis of a high-power ion diode is described. The goal is to produce a ∼1012-cm−3-density Na atomic beam that can be injected into the diode acceleration gap to measure electric and magnetic fields from the Stark and Zeeman effects through laser-induced fluorescence or absorption spectroscopy. A ∼10 ns full width at half-maximum (FWHM), 1.06 μm, 0.6 J/cm2 laser incident through a glass slide heats a Na-bearing thin film, creating a plasma that generates a sodium vapor plume. A ∼1 μs FWHM dye laser beam tuned to 5890 Å is used for absorption measurement of the Na I resonant doublet by viewing parallel to the film surface. The dye laser light is coupled through a fiber to a spectrograph with a time-integrated charge-coupled-device camera. A two-dimensional mapping of the Na vapor density is obtained through absorption measurements at different spatial locations. Time-of-flight and Doppler broadening of the absorption with ∼0.1 Å spectral resolution indicate that the Na neutral vapor temperature is about 0.5–2 eV. Laser-induced fluorescence from ∼1×1012 cm−3 Na I 3s-3p lines observed with a streaked spectrograph provides a signal level sufficient for ∼±0.06 Å wavelength shift measurements in a mock-up of an ion diode experiment. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The present study examined the effect of pre-sleep ingestion of two depressant drugs (nitrazepam and butobarbitone) on subsequent performance. 12 subjects attempted five 15-min tasks in a balanced, latin-square design. The high dose of each drug increased the time on task decline in a short-term memory task. STM did not show a definite time of day effect. Proof reading was superior in the morning, but concept identification was faster in the the afternoons. The implications of these results are briefly discussed.
