Notes: Abstract The fate of total lipids, proteins and carbohydrates in the trachea, lungs, and heart of the common ground squirrel,Funambulus pennanti, have been determined after separate exposure to three principal air pollutants, carbon monoxide (CO), sulphur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Exposure to all of these gases produced edematous conditions; however, the moisture content of heart muscle was reduced. Carbon monoxide (CO) and NO2 are more toxic to pulmonary lipids than SO2. The lipid content of the heart decreased, least effects noted with SO2 treatment. Mechanical properties of the lungs were changed by alteration of the lung lipids causing changes in the surface tension. Changes in protein content were caused by altered membrane permeability. Comparative data on the carbohydrates indicated adverse effects by the pollutants.

Notes: Abstract An unenergised aid to standing up, sitting down and lying down for partially disabled people has been optimised and a half size kinematic model made. Various facilities such as a foot rest, leg rest, arm rest and knee rest are also provided. The patient is lifted and placed in the desired standing and lying positions. An improved Rosenbrock optimisation technique using a penalty function approach is used to determine the optimum dimensions of the various links used in the chair mechanism. A general computer program has been developed to ascertain new dimensions of the mechanism for different input-output functional relationships.

Notes: Formulas are derived for all Hamiltonian integrals required for molecular computations using a novel basis for single-center expansions. The basis orbitals depend exponentially upon α(r - ρ)2 where r and ρ are the distance from center to electron and to a variationally scaled spherical shell, respectively. Comparisons are made between these so-called Gaussian shell orbitals (GSO) and the conventional GTO and STO bases for single-center calculations. A preliminary comparison on H2+ using a single GSO, a non-integer STO, and a GTO gives the optimized energies: -0.51089 a.u., -0.50504 a.u., and -0.50422 a.u., respectively.
