Notes: Abstract The objective of this paper is to modify and generalize the results of a previous study carried out by the author for a single Griffith crack in a homogeneous infinite plane under normal surface tractions [1], to cases in which a nonhomogeneous nonsymmetrical plane problem of several cracks with partial closures, placed and loaded in an arbitrary manner, is considered. Several special examples are treated in detail and the numerical results are plotted in the figures.

Notes: This paper proposes a procedure for the extension of a widely used numerical method1-4 for the solution of systems of singular integral equations, from mixed boundary value problems with two or three parts to those having many parts. The procedure is applied to three previously solved mixed boundary value problems and the result are presented in graphical form. The effectiveness of the given procedure is observed through the results for some limiting and special cases found in the literature.

Notes: Abstract The plane problem of a Griffith crack, partially closed under the effect of a general loading, is considered. The three cases of: a) closure at one end under a nonsymmetrical loading; b) closure at the two ends under a symmetrical loading; and c) closure at the middle under a symmetrical loading, are considered separately. Examples are given from partial closures by concentrated forces of cracks opened by a uniform tension at infinity or a parabolic pressure on the crack surface. The effect of the concentrated forces in decreasing the stress intensity factors so as to prevent crack propagation is examined.
