Notes: We have studied the properties of thin films prepared by laser ablation of a Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8−δ target on carbon fiber substrates. Excimer laser radiation was used to prepare the films. Films were deposited on polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fibers. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to detect the presence of the elements in the film. The structure of the film was studied using x-ray diffraction (XRD). Resistance measurements indicated that the films were not superconducting down to 4.5 K, but the XPS and XRD data showed that films could be formed on the fibers. We find evidence of oxidation of the carbon fiber surface by the superconductor material.

Notes: The effects of interface exchange on magnetic hysteresis are considered for a variety of situations in a two-phase model in which the phases are coupled antiferromagnetically. This work is motivated by studies of Co-CoO nanophase systems where inverted hysteresis loops, a phenomenon closely related to shifted hysteresis loops, are obtained. Some previous examples of systems with inverted hysteresis loops are reviewed and a two-phase model with uniaxial anisotropy and interface exchange is considered. It should be emphasized that this model cannot completely explain inverted hysteresis loops, but it does show that partially inverted loops can be obtained. Cases where H is not along an anisotropy axis are discussed; it was concluded that some alignment of H with the axis of the stronger anisotropy phase is necessary to obtain partially inverted hysteresis.

Notes: We report the effects of alloying both magnetic and nonmagnetic elements on a double-transition system. The system studied is Gd72–xTxGa18B10, where T=Al, Fe, Co, Mo, Pd, Th for 0≤x≤24. Fe incorporates strong ferromagnetic exchange and leads to a crossover to ferromagnetic behavior with a rapid increase in the ordering temperature. Co produces a crossover to ferromagnetic behavior, but in this case the ordering temperature decreases with increasing x. Mo, up to 24 at.%, has only a small effect on the double-transition behavior as seen in the ac susceptibility. The other elements all induce paramagnetic to spin-glass transition behavior and the reasons for this are discussed. We also show that while some of the samples with larger x are partially crystalline, no transitions associated with these crystalline precipitates are present in ac susceptibility.

Notes: Abstract The magnetic properties of Fe-based singlecrystal garnets have been studied. A magnetic field up to 55 kOe in the temperature range from 4.5 to 300 K has been used. The compensation temperature (T comp) of the studied garnets has been determined. The compensation temperature increases with the increase of the rare-earth ions (Ho3+ or Gd3+) substituting Y3+ ions in thec sublattice of R3Fe5O12. AboveT comp, the magnetization was found to be linearly field dependent. The results are in good agreement with magnetization measurements performed on polycrystaline samples, and with calculations based on the crystal field parameters of the isostructural Holmium Gallium Garnet (HoGG).

Notes: Abstract The effects of neutron irradiation on the magnetic and superconducting properties of the YBa2Cu3O7-δ (Y123) superconducting compound have been investigated. No significant change of the superconducting transition temperature (T c) was found. The effect of irradiation on the magnetization critical current density (J c) was studied. Bean's critical state model was used to estimate J c. Around 40% increase in J c was found. The temperature dependence of J c was also studied.

Notes: Abstract While concentric cylinder flows exhibit Ekman pumping at small values of the Reynolds number, once the container symmetry is broken, fluid particles migrate toward the horizontal midplane within the diverging part of the flow domain, and they move away from the midplane within the converging part of the domain. Under this condition, Ekman pumping is evident only at the widest and at the narrowest sections of the gap. When gradually increasing the Reynolds number, the flow acquires a cellular structure in a manner reminiscent of Benjamin's symmetric flow data. The cells spread from the stationary end-plates and link up at the center. The cells persist round the cylinder with varying strength and thus are truly toroidal. We show evidence of solution multiplicity at higher values of the Reynolds number by calculating two qualitatively different flows. One flow contains four cells, the other contains six, and both are supported by identical steady-state conditions.
