Notes: In this paper we present the results of an experimental study of wavy rivulet flow along the lower side of an inclined cylinder. The influence of the inclination angle of the cylinder, mode of irrigation and flow rate on the hydrodynamical characteristics is investigated. It is shown that the rivulet flow is unstable. As a consequence the nonlinear waves appear on a rivulet surface. The different types of surface waves are described. For the purpose of a detailed study of the wave characteristics, a method of superimposed oscillations is applied. New regularities of wave motion were found in comparison to the case of liquid film flow. The critical conditions for liquid ejection from the rivulet are determined. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The electrodiffusion method of flow diagnostics was applied to the measurement of the wall shear stresses and turbulent characteristics in the vicinity of the stagnation point in impinging jets. The wall shear stress vector was determined by a double electrochemical probe consisting of two electrodes separated by a thin insulation gap. The impingement of an axisymmetric jet on a flat plate at normal incidence and the reattachment of the plane jet to an adjacent solid surface due to the Coanda effect were studied. The influence of injection and suction on the two-dimensional jet reattachment is described.

Notes: Abstract The suppression of large-scale vortex formations under gas-saturation conditions is detected on the basis of measurements of the pulsation component of the surface friction when an axisymmetric hot jet of a fluid impinges on an obstacle. The conditions for the resonant enhancement of coherent structures and the suppression of broad-band turbulence are determined for single-phase and gas-saturated impact jets. The evolution of various pulsation components in the gradient region of an impact jet is analyzed.

Notes: Abstract A new type of propagating perturbations on a vortex filament-traveling vortex breakdown-has been observed experimentally. A method of controlled external action on a vortex flow with known parameters is used. Data are obtained on the absolute propagation velocity of the perturbations as a function of the conditions in the vortex chamber, which determine the vortex characteristics.

Notes: Summary The Lighthill kinematic approach is applied for the description of standing waves generated at circular motion of a point source in a dispersive medium. A single nonlinear ordinary differential equation is derived. Numerical calculations are performed for different dispersion relations. The spiral shape of waves and the existence of special points for wave crests are the main peculiarities of solutions obtained. A possible application of the kinematic approach to the description of spiral galaxies and other physical phenomena is demonstrated.

Notes: Abstract Studies were carried out on the organization of the internal connections of the striate cortex in cats in the projection zone of the center (0–5°) of the field of vision by microintophoretic application of horseradish peroxidase to electrophysiologically identified orientational columns. The area containing neurons showing retrograde labeling in most cases extended in the mediolateral direction. Labeled cells were located in the upper (II, III) and lower (V, VI) layers of the cortex, and the shapes and orientations of the areas containing labeled neurons in these layers coincided. Spatial asymmetry was detected in the distribution of labeled neurons relative to the orientational column studied. Labeled cells were located predominantly medial to the columns, regardless of the distance from the projection of the area centralis. Considering the visuotopical map of field 17, the asymmetry detected here provides evidence that neurons in orientational columns have more extensive connections with neurons of the peripheral part of the cortex. An asymmetrical distribution of “silent” zones around the receptive fields of neurons in orientational columns is suggested, and that these appear to receive influences from the periphery of the visual field.

Notes: Abstract Spatial contrast sensitivity was measured in kittens aged 6, 9, and 12 months and in adult cats. Cats had to open one of two small windows, which had a photograph of a grid, in order to obtain food reinforcement. The nonreinforced stimulus was a photograph of a uniform field of the same mean luminance. Visual acuity was constant in kittens aged 6 to 12 months. However, six-month-old kittens had low contrast sensitivity at low spatial frequencies (〈0.6 cycles/degree). At the age of nine months, contrast sensitivity over this range increased, though the level seen in adult cats was reached only at the age of 12 months. It is suggested that the increase in contrast sensitivity occurring after the critical developmental period in kittens reflects maturation of higher-order cortical fields involved in the process of recognition.

Notes: Abstract Spatio-temporal interactions within complex receptive fields in the cat visual cortex were investigated by sequential presentation of two stationary stimuli. When two stimuli were presented in phase (on-on or off-off) in the order corresponding to preferred direction of movement, facilitation or weak inhibition of the response to the second stimulus was observed, whereas if it corresponded to zero direction of movement, the response was strongly inhibited. In the case of stimulation out of phase (on-off or off-on), in the order corresponding to the preferred direction of movement, considerable inhibition of the response to the second stimulus was observed, whereas in the opposite order, facilitation or weak inhibition was observed. The strength of interaction between different parts of the field depended on the distance between them and the duration of the interval between stimuli. Directional selectivity of "complex" neurons is thus ensured by asymmetry of spatio-temporal interactions between receptive field inputs of the same type. Interactions between inputs of different types, arising when a multiedge stimulus (bar, grating) can be used by the visual system to distinguish an object from the background and to assess changes in size of objects and the relative velocity of their movement.
