Notes: Impurity-free vacancy disordering techniques using rapid thermal annealing with electron-beam evaporated SiO2 encapsulant was utilized to study its effect on the optical and electrical properties of the highly strained InGaAs/GaAs quantum well infrared photodetector. The photoluminescence peak is blueshifted and its line width does not increase much, indicating the compositional disordering of the quantum well structure and there is no strain relaxation or minimal deterioration of the heterostructure quality. Both transverse electric and transverse magnetic infrared intersubband transitions are retained and observed after intermixing. The absorption peak wavelength is redshifted from the as grown 10.2 μm to the interdiffused 10.5 and 11.2 μm, for 5 and 10 s annealing at 850 °C, respectively, without appreciable degradation in absorption strength. Theoretical calculations of the absorption spectra are in good agreement with the experimental data. Annealed responsivity spectra of both 0° and 90° polarization are of comparable amplitude but with narrower spectra line width. Dark current of the annealed devices is found to be an order of magnitude larger than the as-grown one at 77 K. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract: We investigated the role of Ca2+-dependent protein kinases in the regulation of astrocytic cell volume. Calmodulin (CaM) antagonists were used to inhibit CaM and thus Ca2+/CaM-dependent protein kinase. The effect of these inhibitors as well as activators and inhibitors of protein kinase C (PKC) on astrocytic volume was measured in response to hypoosmotic stress and under isoosmotic conditions. In conditions of hypoosmolarity, CaM antagonists had no effect on swelling, but inhibited the regulatory volume decrease. PKC activation facilitated the swelling induced by hypoosmotic stress. PKC inhibitors induced cell shrinkage and inhibited the initial phase of regulatory volume decrease, whereas PKC down-regulation caused pronounced swelling and partial inhibition of regulatory volume decrease. In isoosmotic conditions, CaM antagonists and PKC activation did not affect astrocytic volume, but PKC inhibitors caused shrinking and PKC down-regulation led to swelling of these cells. These studies indicate the importance of Ca2+-dependent protein kinases in the regulation of astrocytic cell volume.

Notes: The effect of interdiffusion on strained InGaAs/GaAs quantum-well infrared photodetectors is investigated. Photoluminescence measurements of the interband transition indicate that there is minimal deterioration of the annealed heterostructures, as it is also evident from both the transverse electric and transverse magnetic infrared intersubband optical transitions. The absorption peak wavelength is redshifted from the as-grown 10.2 μm to 10.5 and 11.2 μm for 5 and 10 s annealing, respectively, at 850 °C without appreciable degradation in absorption strength. The peak responsivity of the as-grown and annealed spectra is of comparable amplitude, whereas the annealed spectra become narrower in shape. The dark current of the annealed devices is about an order of magnitude higher than the as-grown one at 77 K. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The intersubband infrared photodetector performance is theoretically analyzed for various stages of interdiffusion in AlGaAs/GaAs quantum well. The absorption strength and responsivity are enhanced for certain extents of interdiffusion and the peak detection wavelength red shifts continuously with a large tunable range from 7 to 38.4 μm. The dark current is at an acceptable value for small diffusion extent. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Empirical results from long-horizon regression tests have been influential in the finance literature. Yet, it has come to be understood that traditional long-horizon tests may be unreliable in finite samples when regressors are persistent and when the horizon is long relative to sample size. Recent research has provided valid alternative inference procedures in long-horizon regression in the case for which the regressor follows a near-unit root autoregressive process. However, in small samples, such processes may sometimes be difficult to distinguish with confidence from other persistent data generating processes, such as those displaying long-memory or structural breaks. In this paper, we demonstrate a simple means by which existing nonparametric sign and signed rank tests may be applied to provide exact inference in long-horizon predictive tests, without requiring any modeling assumptions on the regressor. Employing this robust approach, we find evidence of stock return predictability at moderate horizons using short-term interest rates, but little evidence of either short or long-run predictability using dividend-price ratios.

Notes: Objective To compare the effectiveness of extra-amniotic saline with intra-amniotic prostaglandin F2α in inducing labour in pregnancies with intrauterine fetal death.Design A randomised controlled trial.Participants One hundred and twenty-one women in the extra-amniotic saline group and 123 women in the intra-amniotic prostaglandin group, performed at Harare Maternity Hospital, Zimbabwe during the period October 1994 to February 1996.Results The two methods were equally effective in achieving delivery. The number of women not delivering within 48 hours of recruitment was 6% for the extra-amniotic saline group compared with 11% for the intra-amniotic prostaglandin group (relative risk [RR] 0.51, 95% CI 0.21–1.22). The extra-amniotic saline group required augmentation with Syntocinon more frequently than the intra-amniotic prostaglandin group: 22% compared with 7% (RR 3.1, 95% CI 1.5–6.2). There were more complications associated with the intra-amniotic prostaglandin group: five women developed hypertonic contractions compared with none in the extra-amniotic saline group. In addition 23% of women in the intra-amniotic prostaglandin group developed acute vasovagal-like symptoms lasting for about 10 to 15 minutes which were distressing for the women. There was no evidence of any increase in febrile morbidity from extra-amniotic saline (RR 0.8,95% CI 0.75–1.1).Conclusion Extra-amniotic saline infusion is successful in inducing labour in antepartum fetal deaths after 20 weeks of gestation. This method has been shown to be safe and well tolerated by the women and should be considered in areas with limited resources. This method should be evaluated further for inductions of labour with a live fetus.
