    Notes: The etching of both amorphous and single-crystal Si with XeF2 vapor has been investigated by ion backscattering spectrometry. The etching rate of vapor-deposited Si measured both in situ during the etch and after completion of etching indicates a strong dependence on the partial pressure and thus the flow rate of XeF2. Single-crystal (100) Si exhibits almost twice the etching rate of amorphous Si, which can possibly be attributed to a preferred etching direction in single crystals.

    Notes: Nitrogen ion implantation of Ti-6Al-4V knee joint femoral components was carried out by both plasma source ion implantation (PSII), a non-line of sight technique, and conventional beamline implantation. Implantation using the PSII process was performed on a flat sample as well as a 2×2 square array of components to demonstrate batch processing capability. The retained dose of the flat sample and at different locations on the implanted components was measured by a scanning auger microprobe (SAM). The variation in dose of the PSII treated component was found to be within the SAM error, while the dose at one location on the beamline implanted component was found to be significantly low. For the beamline case, the SAM results show good agreement with the PC profile computer simulation, which includes the angular dependence of sputtering.

    Notes: Summary Patients with localized renal-cell carcinoma who are candidates for renal parenchymal sparing surgery are being treated with isolated renal perfusion with recombinant human tumor necrosis factor (TNF). Isolated organ perfusion is a surgical technique that allows a cancer-bearing organ or region of the body to be treated with high doses of chemotherapy or biologic, agents that would not be tolerated systemically. In patients with in-transit melanoma or unresectable sarcoma, treatment with hyperthermic isolated limb perfusion using TNF, interferon-γ, and melphalan has resulted in response rates exceeding 90%. Because preclinical studies suggest that TNF may induce regression of tumors by causing hemorrhagic necrosis mediated by effects on tumor-related vascular endothelium, a vascular tumor such as renal-cell carcinoma could potentially be very responsive. A phase I study of escalating TNF doses delivered via isolated renal perfusion is currently being conducted.

    Notes: Abstract A combined study has been made of the lattice location and hyperfine field of Yb implanted into Fe single crystals. The location has been determined by ion channeling and back-scattering, the hyperfine field by perturbed angular correlation (PAC) measurements on169Yb (decaying to excited states in169Tm). The channeling experiments indicate that initially about 60% of the Yb atoms occupy substitutional sites in the Fe lattice, while the remaining atoms are not in any specific crystallographic site. On annealing, Yb migrates from substitutional to non-substitutional sites. No Yb atoms remain substitutional after a 600°C anneal. By making PAC measurements at two temperatures for two γ-γ cascades in169Tm, it is found that the PAC pattern can be described using a combined static and time-dependent magnetic interaction. The PAC results show that the average hyperfine field and relaxation parameter decrease on annealing, and that the field disappears after a 600°C anneal. The correlation between the location and the hyperfine field is discussed. A comparison of the results with previous Mössbauer results for151Gd implanted in Fe, together with relaxation parameter measurements on a169Yb2O3 source, suggests that the non-substitutional Yb is internally oxidized in the Fe host.

    Notes: Abstract Nuclear orientation measurements are used to determine the hyperfine hamiltonian for82Br implanted into Fe single crystals (dose 5×1014/cm−2 implant energy 80 keV). Using a model based upon channeling measurements a good fit to the temperature-dependent gamma anisotropy is obtained for a pure magnetic interaction experienced by the 36±5% of Br which implants substitutionally of magnitudeB hf (substitutional)=840±120 kG, withB hf (non-substitutional)〈150 kG. This hamiltonian is used to deduce unknown multipole mixing ratios in the daughter82Kr decay. Hyperfine field systematics are shown to indicate a substitutionalFeBr field of ∼1000 kG, and the origins of this field and the smaller interstitial interaction are discussed.
