Notes: The polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR) of cobalt/copper multilayer films has been measured close to the critical edge for total reflection. Prominent features in the scattered neutron intensity, such as the superlattice diffraction peaks and the positions of the critical edge for total reflection, are sensitive to both the magnetic and structural properties of films, making PNR a useful tool for the characterization of magnetic metallic superlattices. The films were prepared by sputter deposition and the sample composition was measured by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy. It has been found that while the density of the sputtered copper/cobalt multilayers is approximately 5% less than the bulk metals, the cobalt magnetic dipole moment per atom is little changed compared to the bulk. Evidence is also found for oxidation of the top cobalt layers.

Notes: We present design and construction details for a novel high field, small bore permanent hexapole magnet. The design is intended for focusing atomic beams of 3He at thermal energies. The magnet uses an optimized polepiece design which includes vacuum gaps to enable its use with high intensity atomic and molecular beams. The 0.3 m long, 1 mm internal radius magnet achieves a polepiece tip field of 1.1 T using NdFeB permanent magnets and Permendur 49 polepieces. The polepiece shanks are designed to saturate so that the hexapole properties are determined predominantly by the shape of the polepiece tip. The performance of the hexapole assembly is demonstrated with an 8 meV 3He beam in the beam source of the Cambridge spin echo spectrometer and the measured focused beam results show excellent agreement with theoretical predictions and negligible beam attenuation. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Calculations of focal properties and third-order aberration coefficients are presented for atom mirrors based on elastically deformed single-crystal surfaces. Biaxial loading of the mirrors is achieved by a combination of a uniform applied pressure and rectangular boundary conditions. The results are calculated for readily available single-crystal wafers of Si(111) with a thickness of 50 μm and a usable free standing diameter of 18 mm. Focusing of beams at non-normal incidence requires the principal radii of curvature, in planes normal to the mirror plane, to be different. The ratio of these principal radii of curvature is shown to be insensitive to the applied pressure and can be varied by a factor greater than 10 by changing the boundary conditions from square (1:1) to rectangular (1:2). © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Point of View. Sustained monomorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT) is a paradigm of a stable reentrant rhythm. The hallmark of stable reentry is the presence of an excitable gap, which in reentrant VT composes 15% to 45% of the tachycardia cycle length. Resetting allows definition of the extent and pattern of the excitable gap. Site-specific resetting responses suggest that the VT circuit has both functionally and anatomically derived characteristics. Entrainment provides information regarding the effects of overdrive pacing on properties of the tissue composing the circuit rather than on properties of the tachycardia itself. These data help us to understand the mechanisms of pharmacologic agents and to direct ablation of reentrant VT.

Notes: Regional Hyperkalemia and Defibrillation. Introduction: Increased spatial electrical heterogeneity has heen associated with impaired defibrillation efficacy. The current study investigated the relationship between electrical heterogeneity and defibrillation efficacy by manipulating spatial electrical heterogeneity. Methods and Results: We increased spatial electrical heterogeneity by infusing potassium chloride (2 to 4 mEq/hour) or placebo In the left anterior descending artery in 13 pentobarbital anesthetized swine. Electrophysiologic measurements at five myocardial sites and defibrillation energy requirement (DER) values were determined at baseline and during regional hyperkalemia (n = 7) or placebo (n = 6). Regional potassium infusion was titrated to a 20% reduction in action potential duration in the perfused region. Regional hyperkalemia increased biphasic DER values by 87% (P = 0.02), whereas infusion of placebo did not alter defibrillation efficacy. Regional hyperkalemia decreased myocardial repolarization and refractoriness in the perfused region by 21% (P 〈 0.001) and 18% (P = 0.01), respectively. However, regional hyperkalemia increased ventricular fibrillation cycle length (VFCL) by 39% (P = 0.008). Consequently, dispersions of repolarization, refractoriness, and VFCL were significantly increased by 169%, 92%, and 200%, respectively. Regional hyperkalemia also increased ventricular conduction time to the perfused region by 54% (P = 0.006), indicating conduction velocity dispersion, while not affecting local pacing threshold or local voltage gradient. Conclusion: Regional hyperkalemia increased DER values. Regional hyperkalemia likely impairs defibrillation by increasing myocardial electrical heterogeneity, which supports the theory that electrical heterogeneity promotes nonuniform propagation of early postshock activations, thereby inhibiting defibrillation.

Notes: Lidocaine and Shock Proarrhythmia. Introduction: Lidocaine increases monophasic shock defibrillation energy requirement (DER) values but does not alter biphasic shock DER values. However, the mechanism of this drug/shock waveform interaction is unknown. It may be that lidocaine increases the proarrhythmic actions of monophasic shocks but not biphasic shocks. Thus, lidocaine may increase monophasic shock DER values by increasing myocardial vulnerability to shock-induced ventricular fibrillation. Methods and Results: Area of myocardial vulnerability (AOV), defined by a two-dimensional grid according to shock strength (y-axis) and shock coupling interval (x-axis), was assessed for biphasic shocks (n = 11) and monophasic shocks (n = 13) in intact swine hearts. Shocks were randomly delivered during right ventricular pacing at 10 shock strengths (50 to 500 V) and five coupling intervals (160 to 240 msec). AOV was defined as the number of points within the test grid that induced ventricular fibrillation. AOV, upper limit of vulnerability (ULV), and DER values were determined at baseline and during systemic infusion of lidocaine (10 mg/kg/hour). Lidocaine increased AOV, ULV, and DER values by 35%, 23%, and 36%, respectively, for monophasic shocks. However, lidocaine did not alter AOV, ULV, or DER values for biphasic shocks. Conclusion: Lidocaine increases the AOV to monophasic shocks, which is directly related to changes in ULV and DER values. This implies that lidocaine increases the proarrhythmic activity of monophasic shocks but not biphasic shocks. This may explain why lidocaine increases monophasic shock DER values.

Notes: Focusing characteristics of asymmetrically bent single crystal mirrors are discussed in the context of fabricating an optic element for an helium atom microscope. We demonstrate the principle that deforming a clamped, elliptical, single crystal under electrostatic pressure can produce submicron focusing of an helium beam. We present a systematic procedure that may be used to fabricate high precision mirrors close to the Cartesian ideal of any chosen optical configuration. In particular, imaging systems with asymmetric mirror profiles are discussed. Results are independent of crystal characteristics and can be adapted to fit a range of experimental geometries. The calculations indicate that mirror-induced aberrations can be eliminated to fourth order by use of a single actuation electrode in an ideal system. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The authors identify and define the end user computing (EUC) construct and operationalize the construct through development of a valid, reliable measure called the EUC activities scale. This scale is designed to distinguish specific, discrete computer activities performed on the job. The research analyzes the validity and reliability of the instrument based on data obtained from 776 university employees who participated in the initial, exploratory application. Exploratory factor analysis of the scale resulted in five factors. In order of increasing complexity of job-related computer activities, these factors are: beginning EUC activities, intermediate EUC activities, advanced EUC activities, EUC facilitation activities, and EUC infrastructure activities. The factor analysis, reliabilities, and known-groups analysis provide support for the construct validity of the instrument when used in a university setting. Suggestions are provided for further use of the scale in business environments to increase generalizability, refine the instrument, and help establish a coherent theoretical basis for further research in EUC.
