Summary A closed-form solution of the problem of the stress-evaluation in a rigid-perfectly plastic material under plane-strain conditions is presented. The solution is derived from the nonlinear partial differential system consisted of the equations of stress-equilibrium and an appropriate yield condition, in the present case the von Mises-Hencky one. The decoupling of the above system leads to a second order partial differential equation of the Monge type, a closed-form solution of which is obtained.
