Notes: Summary The miscibility of blends of poly(butylene terephthalate) and poly(bisphenol A-carbonate) was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry. Contrary to previously reported data, PBT and PC were found to be almost completely immiscible over the entire compostion range studied. The minor change in Tg's observed for samples quenched form the melt can be attributed to transesterification at elevated temperatures. The melting behavior and normalized enthalpy of fusion are somewhat dependent on composition but the behavior is erratic.

Notes: Abstract Transcranial Doppler detection of microembolic signals has been described in several clinical conditions such as carotid stenosis, prosthetic heart valves, acute stroke, and carotid surgery. The importance of these events for clinical decision-making is still a matter of debate. The authors review the literature and report their personal experience on the clinical significance of microemboli detection.

Notes: Abstract This study analyzes the uptake and endocellular distribution of idarubicin (IDA) in normal and neoplastic urothelial secondary cultures in relation to the changes in concentration and time of exposure. The urothelial lines were isolated by Freshney's method from biopsy fragments taken from five patients with superficial bladder cancer. Pharmacological experiments were carried out on subcultures previously immunophenotypically characterized and did not exceed ten passages. The uptake and endocellular distribution of IDA was analyzed by densitometric image analysis on cells treated for 10, 20, 30 and 60 min and 2 h with scalar dosages from 10 ng/ml to 2430 ng/ml. Microscopic observations and densitometric analyzes revealed that in the cells treated with IDA, fluorescence was higher in the cytoplasm compared to the nucleus and increased with the change in dosage. Moreover, densitometric data showed that IDA uptake in the first 20 min was higher in the neoplastic cells, but after that period its behavior became heterogeneous at 30 and 60 min, while at 2 h there was an inversion of the trend. These results suggest that the in vitro cytotoxicity should be evaluated in order to verify whether the elevated uptake of IDA in the first 20 min of treatment is really correlated to a more elevated toxicity in the neoplastic cells with respect to the normal cells. This is presently under investigation.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the effect of changing ventilatory frequency (VF) of high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) on fluid filtration rate (FFR) in twelve isolated rabbit lungs perfused at constant blood flow. Mean pulmonary artery pressure (Ppa), mean left atrial pressure (Pla), airway pressure (Paw), pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR), pH, O2 and CO2 partial arterial pressures (PaO2 and PaCO2) and plasma colloid osmotic pressure (COP), were measured. We ventilated the lungs with a modified Bird Mark 7 ventilator which could achieve HFOV (range 5–30 Hertz). In each experiment VF was randomly varied on ten different occasions, maintaining each variation for ten minutes. The first group of six rabbits was ventilated under normal haemodynamic conditions. The other six rabbits were ventilated after the production of hydrostatic lung oedema. Blood gas exchange in both groups of rabbits was satisfactory. There was no statistically significant correlation between VF and FFR. We conclude that variations in VF using HFOV does not alter lung fluid balance in normal and in hydrostatic oedema rabbit lungs.

Notes: Summary In the absence of significant tranesterification, blends of poly(ethylene terephthalate) and poly(bisphenol-A carbonate) were found to be almost completely immiscible over the range of compositions studied. Although the observed behavior was sometimes erratic, poly(bisphenol-A carbonate) appears to exert a significant influence on PET melting behavior and normalized heat of fusion.

Notes: A novel two-stage method of preparing 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and methoxyphenol or cholorophenol blocked 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate (TDI) was devised. The first stage reaction of TDI with HEMA was carried out in petroleum ether heterogeneously with the precipitation of the intermediate product, monoadduct, in the reaction solution, and followed by a second stage homogeneous reaction of monoadduct with the blocking agent, chlorophenol, or methoxyphenol, in ethyl acetate. In both reactions the inhibitor, chloranil, and the catalyst, dibutyltin dilaurate, were used. A total of eight products were achieved. Results of elemental analyses of these products along with their LC chromatograms, NMR, and IR spectra indicated that these materials were indeed the compounds expected. Testing results of these materials as dental adhesives will be reported in a separate paper.

Notes: Abstract Microembolic signals (MES) have been described in patients with different types of prosthetic valves. The aim of our study was to compare prevalence of MES in patients with mono-leaflet and bi-leaflet valves, and to correlate them with different clinical and echocardiographic parameters. We evaluated 42 patients, 15 with mono-leaflet and 27 with bi-leaflet valves, with 30-minute bilateral simultaneous transcranial Doppler monitoring for the identification of MES. All patients performed blood testing for international normalized ratio (INR), color-coded duplex of supra-aortic vessels, and echocardiography. Eighteen patients (43%) showed MES; 61% of MES were detected bilaterally, 17% only on the left and 22% only on the right middle cerebral artery (MCA), with no interhemispheric difference. MES did not correlate with patient's age, echocardiographic parameters, INR, presence of atrial fibrillation, or site of valve replacement. One (7%) of the 15 patients with mono-leaflet valves had MES, as opposed to 17 (63%) of the 27 with bi-leaflet valves (p=0.0003). Patients with bileaflet valves and MES had valves of older implantation and, only for aortic valves, larger valve size.
