Notes: Summary New (polychlorophenyl)nickel(II) complexes [NiBrR-(PPh3)2], where R=C6HnCl5−n, have been obtained by oxidative addition of halopolychlorobenzenes to [Ni(PPh3)4]. The addition takes place directly without the participation of NiI intermediates. In some cases [NiBr(PPh)3] is obtained; this comes from the decomposition of [Ni(PPh3)4] and/or from the reaction of [NiBrR(PPh3)2] and [Ni(PPh3)4], when R contains noortho-chlorine. The decomposition of [NiBrR(PPh3)2] has been studied in solution. The nature of the decomposition products and the stability of the organonickel(II) complexes depend fundamentally on steric effects. The compounds in which R contains twoortho-chlorine, are more stable, and give only RH on decomposition; in the other cases RR are obtained. The decomposition is intermolecular and takes placevia loss of phosphine groups; the formation of dinuclear species [NiBrR(PPh3)]2 which eventually give RH and/or RR depending on R is postulated.
