    Notes: Abstract. New accurate results of the neutron-proton spin-dependent total cross section difference $\Delta\sigma_{\mathrm L}(np)$ at the neutron beam kinetic energies 1.39, 1.69, 1.89 and 1.99 GeV are presented. Measurements were carried out in 2001 at the Synchrophasotron of the Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energies of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. A quasi-monochromatic neutron beam was produced by break-up of extracted polarized deuterons. The deuteron (and hence neutron) polarization direction was flipped every accelerator burst. The vertical neutron polarization direction was rotated onto the neutron beam direction and longitudinally (L) polarized neutrons were transmitted through a large proton L-polarized target. The target polarization vector was inverted after 1-2 days of measurements. The data were recorded for four different combinations of the beam and target parallel and antiparallel polarization directions at each energy. A fast decrease of $\Delta\sigma_{\mathrm L}(np)$ with increasing energy above 1.1 GeV was confirmed. The structure in the $\Delta\sigma_{\mathrm L}(np)$ energy dependence around 1.8 GeV, first observed from our previous data, seems to be well pronounced. The new results are also compared with model predictions and with phase shift analysis fits. The $\Delta\sigma_{\mathrm L}$ quantities for isosinglet state I = 0, deduced from the measured $\Delta\sigma_{\mathrm L}(np)$ values and the known $\Delta\sigma_{\mathrm L}(pp)$ data, are also given. The results were completed by the measurements of unpolarized total cross sections $\sigma_{0\mathrm{tot}}(np)$ at 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 GeV and $\sigma_{0\mathrm{tot}}(n$ C) at 1.4 and 1.5 GeV. These data were obtained using the same apparatus and high intensity unpolarized deuteron beams were extracted either from the Synchrophasotron, or from the Nuclotron.

    Notes: Abstract The parametrization of cross-section, analysing power and spin-correlation observables in terms of (l, s, J) matrix elements is given for reactions2H(d, p)3H and2H(d, n)3He at low energies. It is shown that a nearly complete set of matrix elements can be obtained from these observables. The feasibility of colliding-beam arrangement for the spin-correlation experiment is estimated.

    Notes: Abstract In the course of neurosurgical interventions in 40 patients with parkinsonism and torsion muscle dystonia, the background activity (BA) was recorded from 124 neurons of the ventrolateral nucleus (VL) of the thalamus with the aid of microelectrodes during demarcation of boundaries between nuclear structures, and identification of zones within a nucleus. The following characteristic features of the BA in patients with parkinsonism were found: a relatively large proportion (71%) of cells with a burst pattern of activity; a great diversity of burst duration in the activity (short or prolonged bursts); a large proportion (67%) of cells with cyclic changes in the BA frequency; diverse patterns of cyclic modulation, where periods varied from fractions of a second (0.2–0.8 sec) to seconds (2–10 sec) or to tens of seconds (20–40 sec); cyclic successions of spike bursts with the rhythm typical of the peripheral tremor (3–7/sec) in a substantial proportion (40%) of the units. The background spike trains recorded in patients with torsion muscle dystonia consisted of separated spikes in the majority (69%) of units. Only short high-frequency discharges were found in the burst activity in this group; a cyclic BA pattern occurred much less frequently (in 23% of neurons); burst discharges at a 3–4/sec frequency were found only in 4% of the examined cells. The possible nature of motor disorders in patients with parkinsonism and torsion muscle dystonia and the mechanisms of the curing effects of cryodestruction of theVL of the thalamus in the treatment of the disease are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract A polarized ion source giving a current of about 0.1μA has been constructed. The background from nonpolarized deuterons is 1–2%, and that from protons is 10–15%. The degree of alignment of the deuterons has been checked; this is revealed in the anisotropy of the angular distribution of α partides in the reaction T(d,n)He4. The degree of alignment equals P2 = −0.326 ± 0.01, which agrees closely with the theoretical value P2 = −0.328 for an orienting field of 10 Oe. This latter leads to the conclusion that the polarization of the protons is about 50% and that of the deuterons about 33%. Cooling the water dissociator with liquid nitrogen increases the intensity approximately by a factor of two.

    Notes: Abstract A modified Landau hydrodynamical model is applied to study hard thermal photon production in central heavy-ion collisions at LHC, RHIC and SPS energies. It is shown that the phase transition from quark-gluon plasma into hadrons in consequence of the thermodynamical expansion is close to the second order phase transition if a resonance production is taken into account. Hard direct photon emission is also investigated with consideration of nuclear shadowing effect on structure function of quarks and gluons. Also ππ photon background is investigated. It is demonstrated that at the LHC energy photon yield from the quark-gluon plasma in the photon transversal momentumk ⊥ range from 5 to 25 GeV/c exceeds both the background and the direct photon yield. This conclusion may be important for the quark-gluon plasma diagnostic aims. It is also shown that for the LHC energy the thermal photon yield in the present model essentially exceeds this yield obtained in the Bjorken scaling model.
