    Notes: It is seen that the apparent chargeability (Ma)L anomaly over a 2D graphite body splits into two distinct (Vs)L anomalies which closely follow the apparent resistivity profile. This suggests that the electric field amplitude is distorted due to a superficial inhomogeneity creating a (Vs)L anomaly, which bears no relation to the polarized body. The target depth obtained by continuation of such a profile is therefore, not acceptable.

    Notes: The method of downward continuation is well known to those working in gravity, magnetic, SP and low-frequency electromagnetic exploration. It is demonstrated that the method of continuation can also be usefully employed in the interpretation of induced polarization gradient profiling using point electrodes to determine target depth. The apparent resistance Ra and chargeability Ma measurements obtained with point electrode excitation of the ground have been used to compute the values of (Ra)l and (Ma)l that would be obtained with a linear array.Continuation of the apparent polarizability profile thus obtained with the linear array gives a value for the depth of the target which agrees closely with that obtained by the continuation of the SP profile. On the other hand, continuation of the profile of the secondary transient signal (VS)L alone, yields a depth of the target which is in agreement with the borehole information. However, it is seen that the secondary transient voltage profiling response splits into two anomalies which fall on either side of the SP and/or (Ma)l anomaly centre, and does not coincide with that of the latter.

    Notes: This paper is an experimental extension of the theoretical investigations by Roy (1975) on the relative performances of the Laterolog 7, normal and some other sondes in logging of resistive formations. Only infinitely resistive formations have been simulated and placed in a tank containing tap water (true resistivity 27 Ωm) as electrolyte—representing both the mud column and the adjacent formations.Two sets of laboratory results (Doll 1951, NN 1958, 1969), have been repeated and we find that, for both these sets, the performance of the normal device is by far the superior of the two. In addition, we have studied the effect of varying the spacings A1A2, O1O2 and AM of Laterolog 7, normal, and two new sondes—Laterolog 4 and modified unipole—for two bore hole diameters in each case. For formation thicknesses less than A1A2 or AM, the Laterolog 7 is unsuitable because its response is flat and close to the base-line value. The normal device is more diagnostic, although, in such a case, it registers a trough or a resistivity low even against a resistive formation.For bed thicknesses clearly greater than A1A2 or AM, the normal sonde is decidedly superior to Laterolog 7, since its anomalies are sharper and larger. When the formation thickness is equal to or only slightly larger than A1A2 or AM, Laterolog 7 is somewhat better as it records a readable positive deflection while the normal does not. However, one must remember that a single run of the conventional resistivity log includes two normals and a lateral at different spacings. Laterolog 4 and modified unipole can in many instances produce better logs than normal, other considerations apart.The results are consistent with our own theoretical predictions and experience in surface resistivity profiling. They do not, however, agree with the prevalent concepts on Laterolog 7 vis-a-vis normal sonde.

    Notes: Depths of investigation for normal (bipolar) and focusing (unipolar) linear electrode arrays have been computed following the method given earlier (Roy and Apparao 1971) both in homogeneous and layered earth. The focusing arrangement is found to be superior to normal arrangement both in regard to depth of investigation and zone of uniform depth of investigation. This analysis holds good in layered media too. Further, the depth of investigation increases with the increase in the length (2M) of the electrode and reaches a limit, 0.29L for normal and 0.50L for focusing, when the electrode attains an optimum length to satisfy the infinite condition. This optimum length of the electrode is six times the distance L of the observation point from the electrode for normal and about ten times for focusing. A contour diagram for contributions of individual ground elements to the total signal measured at the centre of focused system is also discussed.

    Notes: We define the apparent frequency effect in induced polarization (IP) as the relative difference between apparent resistivities measured using DC excitation on the one hand and high-frequency excitation (when the IP effect vanishes) on the other. Assuming a given threshold for the minimum detectable anomaly in the apparent frequency effect, the depth of detection of a target by IP can be defined as that depth below which the target response is lower than the threshold for a given electrode array. Physical modelling shows that for the various arrays, the depth of detection of a highly conducting and volume polarizable target agrees closely with the depth of detection of an infinitely conducting and non-polarized body of the same shape and size. The greatest depth of detection is obtained with a two-electrode array, followed by a three-electrode array, while the smallest depth of detection is obtained with a Wenner array when the array spread is in-line (i.e. perpendicular to the strike direction). The depth of detection with a Wenner array improves considerably and is almost equal to that of a two-electrode array when the array spread is broadside (i.e. along the strike direction).

    Notes: Depth of detection of a target can be defined as that depth below which the target cannot be detected with a given electrode array assuming that the minimum detectable anomaly is 10%. Following this definition, physical modelling was carried out to determine depths of detection of conductive targets of limited lateral extent such as a vertical sheet, a horizontal cylinder and a sphere (infinitely conducting).It is seen that the two-electrode array has the greatest depth of detection followed by the three-electrode array, while a Wenner array has the smallest depth of detection, when the array spread is in-line (i.e. perpendicular to the strike direction). On the other hand, the depth of detection with a Wenner array improves considerably and is almost equal to that of the two-electrode array when the array spread is broadside (i.e. along the strike direction).With an increase in the depth extent of the vertical sheet from 10 to 20 times its thickness, there is an increase in the depth of detection with all arrays except for the three-electrode array when the array spread is in-line, and with the Wenner array when the array spread is broadside.
