    Notizen: For the lifetime evaluation of plasma facing materials in fusion experimental machines, it is essential to investigate their surface behavior and their temperature responses during an off-normal event such as the plasma disruptions. An infrared thermometer with a sampling speed as fast as 1×10−6 s/data, namely, the high-speed infrared thermometer (HSIR), has been developed by the National Research Laboratory of Metrology in Japan. To evaluate an applicability of the newly developed HSIR on the surface temperature measurement of plasma facing materials, high heat flux beam irradiation experiments have been performed with three different materials under the surface heat fluxes up to 170 MW/m2 for 0.04 s in a hydrogen ion beam test facility at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute. As for the results, HSIR can be applicable for measuring the surface temperature responses of the armor tile materials with a little modification. It is also confirmed that surface temperatures measured with the HSIR thermometer show good agreement with the analytical results for stainless steel and carbon based materials at a temperature range of up to 2500 °C. However, for aluminum the HSIR could measure the temperature of the high dense vapor cloud which was produced during the heating due to lower melting temperature. Based on the result, a multichannel arrayed HSIR thermometer has been designed and fabricated. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Effect of primary electron distribution on ion species yield is studied using a semicylindrical, multicusp plasma generator. Experimentally obtained, ion species yields were correlated with primary electron orbits estimated by computer simulation in several magnetic field configurations, where primary electron distributions were considered to be different. The result showed that a magnetic field configuration which produced lower proton yield had denser primary electron orbits in the neighborhood of the plasma grid. The floating potential of the plasma grid was also measured to suppose a distribution of the primary electrons. As a result, the proton yield increases with an increase of the floating potential of the plasma grid. These results lead us to confirm that the proton yield is determined by distribution of the primary electrons in the neighborhood of the plasma grid, in addition to the ratio of the plasma volume and the effective ion loss area. The highest proton yield of 93% and the lowest proton yield of 83% were obtained at the floating potential of the plasma grid of −5 and −21 V with respect to the anode potential, respectively, at an extraction current density of 150 mA/cm2.

    Notizen: A high proton yield beam was produced in a semicylindrical multicusp plasma generator. The dimension of the cylinder is 34 cm in diameter and 129 cm in length, and the beam extraction area is 8 cm in width and 120 cm in length. A strongly linked magnetic field configuration was utilized to confine the primary electrons in the cylinder and prevent them from flowing into the beam extraction region. As a temporary test hydrogen ion beams were extracted from the central region of the plasma generator. Ion species in the beam were measured by a Doppler-shifted spectroscopy of Balmer-alpha light and found to be 95% at a beam current density of 175 mA/cm2 at the filling pressure of 0.4 Pa.

    Notizen: Beam steering technique using aperture displacement was applied to produce uniform beam distributions for testing high heat flux components. Only the apertures of a suppression grid of the JT-60 ion source were programmatically displaced with respect to those of the other three grids. Flat heat flux distributions with a uniformity within ±5% were experimentally obtained over an area of 10 cm ×10 cm at a position 4 m from the ion source. The peak heat flux ranges from 3 to 60 MW/m2 with the beam energies of 30–70 keV.
