    Notes: Abstract Angular dependences of the magnetization hysteresis loops have been studied at T=77 K on YBCO single crystals exhibiting the peak effect. The peak effect is shown to be related to the pinning of longitudinal vortices along the c axis at twin boundary-type ordered defects. The behavior of the peak effect at intermediate angles is explained by anisotropic magnetic field penetration into quasi-two-dimensional superconductors. In thin crystals with a dilute ordered-defect structure this can result in an enhanced peak effect due to formation of a vortex kink structure and to “internal” pinning of transverse vortex segments at Cu-O sheets.

    Notes: Abstract Results are presented of studies of the dynamic magnetic susceptibility of CuO, Cu1−x Zn x O (x ≈ 1.5%), and Cu1−x Li x O (x ≈ 1%) single crystals. The orientational dependence of the ESR spectra was investigated at room temperature. The results for CuO are analyzed using a model of a quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet (S = 1/2) with anisotropic exchange interaction between Cu2+ spins in the chains and exchange coupling between the chains allowing for one-dimensional spin diffusion and spinon excitations. The estimated line width is of the same order of magnitude as the experimental data. Substituting Cu with Zn scarcely alters the spin dynamics of the Cu2+ ions, as in weakly diluted magnets. Lithium doping substantially increases the ESR line width and this is attributed to excess holes forming rapidly relaxing spin complexes with copper ions.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of doping with Li+, Zn2+, Ni2+, and Ga3+ ions on the magnetic susceptibility of the low-dimensional antiferromagnet CuO (T N=230 K) has been studied within a broad temperature range of 77–600 K. The solubility of impurity ions in the CuO lattice is low, ⩽3%. Impurity ions, similar to intrinsic defects, distort antiferromagnetic coupling and can shift the long-and short-range magnetic-order regions toward lower T.

    Notes: Abstract The problem of localized superconductivity has motivated the preparation of Mg1−x CuxO solid solutions with NaCl structure and 0.01≤x≤0.20, as well as a study of the magnetization and magnetic susceptibility χ in the 2–400 K temperature range and in magnetic fields of up to 5 T. The temperature dependence of χ is described for all compositions by the Curie-Weiss law, χ = C/(T − θ), where the constant C is close to the value calculated for each composition for μeff = 1.7–1.9µB, and θ is close to zero. For T 〈 30 K, χ(T) deviates for all compositions toward lower χ, which can be attributed to magnetic ordering of exchange-coupled clusters in the solid solution. At T∼320–330 K, an anomaly of a diamagnetic type, i.e., a decrease of χ by 6–30% of its paramagnetic value, has been observed for all compositions against the background of the generally paramagnetic χ(T). A discussion is presented of alternative reasons for this anomaly and of its possible connection with localized superconductivity.

    Notes: Abstract Solid solutions of the system La1−x CaxMnO3 are synthesized, and their magnetic and electrical properties are investigated. As x is increased, the crystal lattice changes symmetrically from an orthorhombic (x=0 and x=0.8) to a cubic structure (0〈x⩽0.6 and x=1). Nonstoichiometric LaMnO3 and compositions with a low Ca content (0〈x〈0.4) are collinear ferromagnets. A metal-insulator transition is observed in them near the Curie temperature. Compositions with 0.6⩽x⩽0.9 exhibit a semiconductor-type conductivity and an unusual temperature behavior of the magnetization and the susceptibility with very distinct Curie and Néel temperatures. The magnetic properties of the solid solutions are explained on the basis of the model of ferro-antiferromagnetic phase separation.

    Notes: Abstract Mg1−x CuxO solid solutions having an NaCl structure with 0⩽x⩽0.20 are synthesized and Cu-Mg1−x CuxO structures are prepared for superconductivity studies. The magnetic susceptibility χ, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and electrical conductivity of the solid solutions are studied at temperatures of 5–550 K. It is shown that χ −1(T) obeys the Curie-Weiss law with a paramagnetic Curie temperature Θ close to zero and an effective magnetic moment μ eff=1.9 µ B, close to the 1.73 µ B of a Cu2+ ion with spin S=1/2. The width ΔH of the EPR line depends weakly on temperature and increases as x is raised. The volume narrowing of the EPR linewidth ΔH is used to estimate the exchange interaction parameter, 3×10−4 eV. The g-factor is close to 2 and is temperature independent. The electrical conductivity of Mg1−x CuxO at T=300 K is ≈10−11–10−12 Ω−1 cm−1 for x=0 and increases to 10−5–10−6 Ω−1 cm−1 for x=0.15–0.20. The conductivity is p-type. Magnetic shielding is observed in Cu-Mg1−x CuxO structures with x=0.15 and 0.20. The possible connection of this phenomenon with interference superconductivity in the contact layer of the structure is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility χ and the influence of oxygen vacancies in CuO single crystals on it are investigated. The temperature dependences of χ(T) along the a, b, and c axes in the range 60〈T〈600 K and the behavior of the field dependence of the magnetization σ(H) above and below the Néel temperature T N are plotted for a crystal before and after heat treatment. The χ(T) curves have the form characteristic of low-dimensional systems, which become three-dimensional when the temperature is lowered. The character of the χ(T) curves remains unchanged after annealing. Oxygen vacancies have practically no influence on the a-axis magnetic susceptibility, but they alter the absolute values of the b-and c-axis susceptibilities. The significant effects of reducing the oxygen concentration include a decrease in the magnitude of the low-temperature anomaly (increase) in χ and an increase in the minimum value of χ. The results of the calculations of the exchange parameter I/k and the g factor are discussed in terms of the Heisenberg and Ising models for a one-dimensional system.
