    Notizen: A technique is described whereby sward defoliation by sheep can occur in the absence of treading and the deposition of excreta. By using this technique, swards were grazed to a moderate severitj, leaving behind an amount of herbage similar to that left after cutting; the DM yields from both methods are compared. The technique was also used to study other swards which were grazed either very leniently or very severely. Within the limits tested, efficient rotational grazing (i.e. the removal of a large proportion of the herbage on each occasion) did not give the greatest DM yields, except at the first harvest. Cutting- and grazing-treatments produced differences in sward structure.

    Notizen: Cutting patterns producing high and low areas were imposed on swards of Dactylis glomerata and Lolium perenne to test whether output could be increased when compared with traditional uniform cutting methods. In two experiments, swards of both grasses were divided into parallel 9 cm strips which were cut alternately on different occasions to a height of 5 cm. These swards yielded a similar quantity of herbage DM to that from other swards cut uniformly at the same height and frequency. In a third experiment, swards of Lolium perenne were divided into alternate strips of unequal width (9 and 4.5 cm). The narrow strips were allowed to grow to a height of 15 cm and were occasionally trimmed at this height. The wide strips were cut to 5 cm at 2–or 4–weekly intervals. Areas cut to 5 cm every 2 weeks yielded significantly more DM when adjacent to high areas than when adjacent to areas cut to 5 cm every 2 weeks (i.e. under uniform cutting). The interaction between adjacent areas having different defoliation regimes is discussed in relation to the possibility of obtaining some additional output from a suitable no niform cutting system compared with uniform cutting. Sward productivity under no niform grazing patterns of livestock is also discussed.

    Notizen: White clover swards were grown in a freely ventilated glasshouse during August and September 1979. The uninterrupted growth of these swards, which were grown in Perlite with either nitrate or biologically fixed nitrogen, was studied from 5 weeks after sowing until peak dry weights of the live sward components occurred. The dry weight of leaf laminae, petioles, stolons, roots, nodules and dead material was determined weekly together with live leaf numbers and leaf lamina area. The pattern of dry matter accumulation of the yield components of the swards (live leaf laminae plus petioles) was characterized by an initial period of more or less exponential growth up to 6 weeks from sowing dominated by leaf lamina development. This was followed by a linear phase, when petiole weight increased rapidly and a final slowing down period terminated by peak yields of live DM 12 weeks after sowing.The weight of stolons, roots and nodules increased slowly during the period dominated by leaf lamina growth compared with the rapid increase thereafter, which resulted in a two- to three-fold increase in the weight of stolons, roots and nodules by the time the weights peaked. It is assumed that after the leaf area index of the sward had reached a plateau there was a limit to the assimilate supply to the sward components at a stage when they were all apparently competing for photosynthates.     Notizen: Plants of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) cv. Blanca and red clover (T. pratense L.) cv. Hungaropoly were grown singly in controlled environments. The effects of eight treatments on the two species were examined: 16- and 8-h photo-periods × 20/15 and 15/10°C day/night temperatures ×Rhizobium-free plants receiving nitrate N and inoculated plants receiving no combined N. Twice weekly measurements of the main axis leaf size, petiole length, rate of leaf production and the time period between the appearance of a leaf and its final size were carried out for 8 weeks after sowing.Increasing the day/night temperature from 15/10 to 20/15°C, or doubling the daylength from 8 to 16 h (doubling the daylength increased temperature by 1·2°C) accelerated the rate of leaf production and expansion and increased petiole length and the final area of leaves. Most aspects of main axis leaf growth were reduced in the inoculated plants dependent on their own N fixation compared with the nodule-free plants receiving abundant nitrate N. The results suggest that the temperature above which white clover exhibits appreciable leaf growth in the field could be relatively high compared with grasses. Further research is required to define these differences and relate them to seasonal changes in the environment.

    Notizen: Seed of S24 perennial ryegrass of two weight ranges, 0.9–2.1 and 2.5–3.6 mg, were sown in soil at depths of 1.25, 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 cm. Seedling growth was studied during the 3 weeks following germination.Seeds of both weight ranges germinated equally well at soil depths down to 7.5 cm. However, the number of shoots that emerged was reduced as the sowing depth increased. At similar depths of sowing, seedlings from the heavy seed were heavier and developed more leaves and tillers than those from light seed. Deeper sowing reduced seedling weight and the rate of leaf- and tiller-production. After emergence, the relative growth rates of the seedlings which grew from seed of both weight ranges were similar at those depths of sowing which permitted the highest proportion of emerged shoots to seeds sown. This indicates that the weight advantage gained by the seedlings that developed from heavy seed during their non-photosynthetic stage of growth was maintained, and was not increased by a greater relative growth rate after photosynthesis began.The implications of the findings are discussed in relation to plant breeding, commercial seed production and sward establishment.

    Notizen: Summary. It is practicable to use herbicides as an alternative to ploughing grass swards for the preparation of a seedbed for the sowing of cereals and kale. The yields of spring barley and kale following a glaass/clover sward killed with 10 lb/ac amitrole-T were similar to those obtained following ploughing. Yields of tip to 40 cwt/ac of winter wheat were obtained following grass swards killed with amitrole-T compared with up to 45 cwt/ac after ploughing.The ideal herbicide must kill all plants in a sward and have no residual toxicity to the subsequent crop. At 10 lb/ac, amitrole-T killed most plants in the sword, but it was considered necessary to delay sowing for at least 3 weeks after spraying to minimize the danger of residual toxicity. Ploughing gave the lowest incidence of grasses persisting from the sward. Paraquat did not control clover and Agropyron repens, while broad-leaved weeds were more common on the ploughed than on the sprayed land.There were differences in the amount of nitrogen mineralized in ploughed and In undisturbed soil, but these were insufficient to affect crop yields materially. When a lower yield followed herbicidal destruction of the sward, this was not accompanied by a reduced percentage nitrogen content.L'emploi des déherbants pour la rénovation des prairies

Blanca were grown singly in pots in controlled environments, or in small swards in a glasshouse, to determine how their distribution of dry weight between root and shoot was influenced when they were dependent on N2 fixation in their root nodules or when they lacked nodules but utilized an abundant supply of nitrate nitrogen. In single plants and in swards, changes in root/shoot ratio with increasing age and plant development were not influenced by the source of nitrogen, but nodulated plants always displayed a higher root/shoot ratio. When nodulated plants were supplied with nitrate nitrogen, root/shoot ratio declined to values intermediate between those of nodulated and of nitrate plants. The results are discussed in relation to the persistence of white clover, and the general level of productivity, in grass-clover swards.
