Notes: Six patients in a family with a history of hereditary angioedema reported swelling of the extremities and recurrent abdominal pain occurring spontaneously or after trauma. Attacks of oedema involving the airways, the greatest danger with this disorder, were present only in one case. This autosomal dominant disease is due to deficient activity of the inhibitor of the first component of complement. Low levels of C4, and absence of C1 esterase inhibitor confirm the diagnosis. Two asymptomatic cases with the appropriate biochemical abnormality are reported in this study. For short term prophylaxis of attacks (before surgery especially), fresh frozen plasma is used, or better still, C1 esterase inhibitor. For long term prophylaxis of attacks antifibrinolytic and hormonal drugs are used: in two cases, the authors obtained good results with methyltestosterone after failure of tranexamic acid.

Notes: A clinical, pathological and immunological study was made of fifty cases of asthma developing in adult life—twenty-seven females and twenty-three males. The mean age of appearance of asthma was 51 years. In spite of the paroxysmal onset observed in thirty-nine cases, the course was always severe, leading to dependence upon corticosteroid treatment in thirty-six cases. Two-thirds of the subjects had either a personal or familial atopic history, one-third had positive skin tests to routine respiratory allergens, and one-third had a peripheral blood eosinophilia higher than 400 mm3. Total serum IgE was not raised in any case and attempts at hyposensitization were not effective. The titre of serum complement was normal and investigation for autoantibodies was negative in thirty-one subjects. Study of the HLA system in twenty-eight cases showed a significantly raised frequency of antigen HLA9. The bronchial biopsies were examined histologically in thirty-one cases and by fluorescence examination in fifteen. The histological appearance was sterotyped and non-specific. There was some modification of the lining consisting of thickening and irregularity of the basal membrane with evidence of hyperfunction of adjacent mesenchymal tissues. The basal membrane showed thickening, estimated in two cases by electron microscopy to be of 20–30 μm. This was due largely to collagen, which concealed the true basal membrane, the ultrastructure of which was well preserved.Immunofluorescence tests made it possible to show the presence of IgA, IgG and IgM constantly associated with the C3 component of complement. This was localized mainly in the superficial part of the thickened basal membrane and in the cytoplasm of the epithelioid cells. Fibrin showed a different appearance, with irregular fluorescence situated essentially along the base of the superficial epithelial membrane. These immunofluorescence findings are compatible with transudation and also of a local immunological reaction.

Notes: Summary Antibodies reacting with 3,5,3′,5′ tetraiodo-l-tyrosyl-l-tyrosine (I2Tyr-I2Tyr) were elicited in rabbits by immunization with an oxidized yeast conjugate coupled with I2Tyr-I2Tyr. Ion-exchange chromatography was used to purify immunoglobulins, in order to improve the specificity in measurement of I2Tyr-I2Tyr level in patient serum. IgG binding capacity versus I2Tyr-I2Tyr was considerably increased after immunoglobulin purification.

Notes: Abstract The preservation of erythrocytes is important during cytostatic chemotherapy. To study the synergistic effect of GM-CSF plus G-CSF on the red blood recovery, we looked at the kinetics of red blood cells, total reticulocytes and High Fluorescence Reticulocytes (HFR) from peripheral blood of 26 breast cancer patients, between 2 cycles of chemotherapy. After four days of TNCF (Thp-doxorubicin, Vinorelbine, Cyclophosphamide, Fluorouracil) treatment, 12 patients received either GM-CSF or G-CSF (D5-D16) and 14 received both of them (GM-CSF, D5-D14 and G-CSF, D10-D14). Our results showed a significantly lesser RBC decrease for patients receiving both CSFs versus only one CSF (p 〈 0.05). This greater RBC preservation was explained by the increase of HFR and total reticulocytes from D12 to D17 in the peripheral blood of patients receiving the two CSFs, with significantly values greater than that of patients receiving one CSF (p 〈 0.01) it showed that the synergistic GM-CSFplus G-CSF effect observed previously on PBPC results in a positive effect on erythroid lineage. GM-CSF plus G-CSF association exhibit in vivo multilineage (myeloid and erythroid) activity showing the interest to use different cytokines in combination to obtain a better hematological recovery after induction chemotherapy as well as a better quality of PBPC mobilization for transplantation after high-dose chemotherapy.

Notes: Abstract We report the histological and immunological findings in 20 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with impaired salivary scintigraphy but without sicca complex. This condition was stable over 2–5 years and associated with mild infiltrates on lip biopsies. Increased levels of IgG, immune complexes, and antinuclear antibodies were found in seven patients (35 vs 69% in secondary Sjögren's syndrome). Two of the seven patients later developed xerostomia. The above-mentioned immunological abnormalities may increase the likelihood of developing a clinical impairment of salivary function in patients with an abnormal salivary scintiscan, the latter being a frequent, yet often isolated, finding in RA. Antisalivary duct antibodies were not related to any other parameter of salivary gland involvement.
