    Notes: Host specificity of the marine ciliate Cryptocaryon irritans was investigated using seven parasite isolates and six experimental fish species. The low degree of host specificity of C. irritans to teleost fish has been confirmed. Furthermore, five fish species occurring outside the geographical range of this parasite were also susceptible to infection; three of these could be at risk to Cryptocaryon through aquaculture practices.

    Notes: Small plots of potatoes were inoculated with a mixture of Erwinia carotovora (E. c.) subsp. carotovora and E. carotovora subsp, atroseptica strains resistant to rifampicin. Subsequently the population off, c. subsp, carotovora and E. c. subsp, atroseptica (rifampicin-resistant and wild types) present as epiphytes on the surface of potato leaves was assessed using three methods, qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative, during 1986 and 1987. The population was generally low (〈 102 colony forming units (〉 104cfu/g leaves) but reached higher levels (〉 104 cfu/g) on occasions later in the growing season, Rifampicin-resistant erwinias were reisolated only infrequently throughout this study. Different methods of haulm destruction (herbicide, pulverization, sulphuric acid treatment and natural senescence) greatly influenced the number of erwinias present in the resulting plant debris. Pulverization resulted in the highest population (106-107 wild-type cfu/g) in both seasons. In 1987. the wettest of the two seasons of this study, herbicide treatment resulted in similarly high populations. The results suggest that the high numbers of erwinias found in the haulm debris were probably derived from the generally low populations of epiphytic bacteria previously present on healthy leaves, E. c. subsp, carotovora was the most frequent subspecies in the rotting plant debris; E. c. subsp, atroseptica was more commonly found on healthy leaves. The implications of the results are discussed in relation to the production of seed potatoes with a low risk of blackleg.

    Notes: Abstract. Cryptocaryon irritans (Ciliophora), isolated from the reef fish, Grammistes sexlineatus Thumberg, was established as primary infections in mullet, Chelon labrosus (Risso). Only a small percentage (〈22%) of exposed theronts established infection under controlled conditions. This is discussed in relation to the probability of host parasite contact and susceptibility. There was no evidence of density-dependent or intra-specific competition in trophont establishment, a strong linear relationship being found between the levels of exposure and infection. Infection intensity was assessed in relation to host survival, indicating a 90% probability of host death following levels of 〉200 trophonts per gram of host. A close temporal association between host death and trophont exit was found, possibly as a result of epidermal disruption leading to dysfunction of osmoregulatory and respiratory systems.

    Notes: Abstract. Cryptocaryon irritans was isolated from Grammistes sexlineatus and maintained in aquaria under controlled conditions using the mullet, Chelon labrosus (Risso), as an experimental host. The pellicle and cortical cytoplasm of the trophont, tomont, tomite and theront stages were investigated with the aid of transmission electron microscopy. The general structural organization of the pellicle resembles that of the freshwater holotrich, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis; however, the pellicular alveoli are characterized by the accumulation of electron-dense material in the trophont, tomite and theront, this material being lost in the newly-encysted tomont. The outer membranes of the pellicle are infolded into the alveoli of the trophont. Cilia are present at all stages of the life cycle, although at encystment their numbers are greatly reduced by shedding. Mitochondria, mucocysts and Golgi-like cisternae are distributed throughout the cortical cytoplasm. Mucocysts differ from those of I. multifiliis in size, shape and distribution and are of uniform electron density. The role of the pellicle and cortical cytoplasm is discussed in relation to the invasion of the fish epidermis, possible intertransferance of materials between parasite and host and the process of encystment.

    Notes: Summary Chambers were designed to simulate environmental conditions present in commercial potato stores and were used to introduce condensation to tubers infected with silver scurf (Helminthosporium solani). The electrical resistance measured across the skin of tubers from the top of the chambers was consistently lower than that from the bottom of the chamber, and this was reflected in an increased number ofH. solani spores produced by the top tubers. An increase in the length of the condensation period resulted in the skin resistance remaining lower for a longer period and also resulted in higher number of spores. Tubers held at relatively high ambient temperatures (15 °C) required a shorter period of condensation to cause an increase in spore count. This investigation highlighted the need for close monitoring of store environments so that condensation events can be quickly identified and the tubers dried.
