Notes: [Auszug] We will refer first to the spectral shape of the cosmic-ray electrons expected from radio observations. It is found from the latest compilation of the radio intensity, I(v), by A. S. Webster (personal communication) between 10 and 8,000 MHz in the direction of the anticentre, that the spectrum ...

Notes: [Auszug] We have previously reported on the p/p in the 4.2-12.5 GeV/c range from an earlier (September 1975) balloon flight3. The present instrument, shown in Fig. 1, differs from the previous experiment in one important respect. In the present flight there were three additional position measuring multiwire ...

Notes: Abstract The result on λ-rays obtained from the analysis of 5800 orbits of data from the University of Rochester telescope on board the OSO-3 satellite are presented. For γ-rays of energy greater than 100 MeV, an upper limit of 2.3×10−4 cm−2 s−1 std has been placed on the diffuse (assumed isotropic) flux. An upper limit to the flux from the Sun is set at 3.2×10−5 and 2.4×10−5 cm−2 s−1 for energies greater than 50 MeV and 100 MeV, respectively. All flux values are calculated assuming a π0-decay source of γ-rays.

Notes: Abstract We have calculated the energy spectra of cosmic ray secondary antiprotons and positrons using the latest available data on inclusive reactions. Using the measured positron spectrum, we have found that the amount of matter traversed by the cosmic rays in the few GeV region to bem≈4.7±1.5 g cm−2 of interstellar hydrogen. The computed antiproton to proton ratio is about 4×10−4 for energies 5–10 GeV. This is sufficient to make observations of antiprotons feasible from balloon flights. We have also pointed out the type of information that can be obtained if accurate information of the spectra of these two components becomes available.

Notes: Abstract We have obtained a simple representation to the observed invariant cross-section for the production of neutral pions in proton-proton collisions. Making use of this representation, we have calculated the differential and integral production spectra of gamma rays in the Galaxy from interactions of cosmic ray nuclei with interstellar gas. It is shown that the uncertainties in deducing interstellar proton spectrum by demodulating the observed spectrum do not affect very much the gamma ray spectrum. We have also determined the gamma ray production spectrum through bremsstrahlung process for a typical interstellar electron spectrum derived from the radio spectrum in the Galaxy. From these, the total gamma ray production spectrum resulting from the interaction of cosmic rays with interstellar matter is compared with the observed gamma ray spectrum in the Galaxy and some inferences have been obtained. We also point out the possible uncertainty in the present calculation and suggest the improvements needed.

Notes: Abstract The propagation of cosmic ray electrons in the framework of the Disk-Halo diffusion model in which the diffusion coefficientD ∝z ∝ E μ (wherez is the distance from the galactic plane andE is the energy), and the magnetic fieldHαz −ξ has been examined by making use of the recently available radio data up to 8 GHz toward the Anticenter (A) and Halo Minimum (M). The following inferences are then made. From the difference in the frequency at which steepening occurs in the radio spectra towardA andH, it is found that the observations are consistent with the magnetic field decreasing withz such that ξ=0.24–0.37. An electron injection spectrum with a single power law down to energies well below 1 GeV cannot explain satisfactorily the observed radio spectra. All observations, however, can be understood in a self consistent way if the observed steepening of the radio spectra, and hence the interstellar electron spectrum, is due partly to the deviation in the power law electron injection spectrum below a few GeV and partly to the first break arising from electron energy losses occurring in the same energy region. In this case, using the value of ξ obtained above and a value of μ=0.3–0.6, it is found that the spectral index γ0 of the injected electrons above a few GeV has a value between 1.9 and 2.3 and the index δ a value between 0.5 and 1. Further, if the electrons and protons have the same spectral shape at injection, then γ0=2.1–2.3.

Notes: [Auszug] Our calculations on the expected antiprotons-positron ratio differ in one significant respect from those of Shen and Berkey1: we have detailed measurements of the cross section of antiproton production up to intersecting storage ring energies. That permitted us to calculate the e+/p ratio quite ...
