Notes: Soft x-ray pinhole imaging has recently become established as a valuable diagnostic for visualization of field reversed configuration (FRC) plasmas in the TRX-2, FRX-C/LSM devices. Gated MCP image converter devices with CsI cathodes and Be filters with a peak response around 11 nm wavelength are used for exposure durations ranging from a few tenths up to several microseconds. Results of experiments with single and Chevron channel plates are discussed along with estimates of linear exposure limitations with both film and CCD cameras as recording media. Plans for multiframe devices on the FRX-C/LSM and the LSX devices are also discussed.

Notes: In a recent paper [A. D. Bailey et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 34, 3124 (1993)], the authors presented direct planar laser induced fluorescence measurements of the oscillatory ion fluid velocity field in the presence of a large amplitude drift-Alfven wave. Surprisingly, the measured speeds were an order of magnitude lower than predicted by standard fluid theory, yet the flow pattern was consistent with the fluid theory. A new model, based on the connection between stochasticity and bulk behavior, is presented which gives insights into the cause of this behavior. It is shown that when particle motion is stochastic, invariant sets of a ‘Poincaré map' define a flat-topped particle distribution function consistent with both the electromagnetic field driving the Vlasov equation and the fine-scale single particle dynamics. The approach is described for the general case and explored for a slab model of the observed drift wave. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: It is experimentally demonstrated that, with proper current bias, emissive probes can accurately measure dc electric potential in a vacuum. A comparison is made of the accuracy and time response of this "vacuum current bias'' method with two other emissive probe techniques, the inflection point in the limit of zero emission, and the floating potential of a strongly heated probe.

Notes: Summary The relative significance of attached and unattached bacteria in bio-oxidation was assessed using a fluidised bed reactor. The unattached bacteria were removed from the system after different times in batch culture. Following wasout, the concentration of unattached bacteria recovered rapidly. This was ascribed to desorption of attached bacteria rather than growth of free, unattached bacteria. Throughout the cell depletion and repopulation phase, the rate of pyrite oxidation remained fairly constant.

Notes: Bio-oxidation has proved to be a viable process for the oxidative pretreatment of refractory gold-bearing sulfides. Generally, the oxidation rate is maximal at 20% solids for high sulfide content materials [ca. 30% sulfur]. Low grade ores [1% sulfur] have been successfully oxidized at 55% solids, indicating a link between the sulfide grade of the material and the optimal solids concentration for operation. Concentrations of high solids have been reported to lower oxidation rates, increase lag times, and decrease the ultimate extent of oxidation. This review discusses the various factors that have been proposed as causes of these phenomena. The factors include oxygen and carbon dioxide availability, low bacteria-solids ratio; mechanical damage or inhibition of the bacteria, inhibition of bacterial attachment, and the buildup of toxic leach products or other detrimental substances such as some flotation reagents. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
