    Notes: SUMMARY. A 2-year sampling programme of three benthic sites in a small eutrophic loch revealed large communities of ciliated protozoa consisting of a wide diversity of species (91 spp. over the 2 years). Species-groups described with the aid of association analysis (normal and inverse) indicated the existence of a ‘ubiquitous’ species-group consisting of at least Cyclidium glaucoma and Aspidisca costata. Another species-group containing large ciliates (Loxodes striatus, Frontonia leucas, Spirostomum spp. and Paramecium spp.) was characteristic of the summer months at all sites. It is advocated that association analysis might increase the value of protozoa as pollution indicators.

    Notes: Data collected from field trials carried out in different years and environments were used to determine competitive ability and threshold levels of Ammi majus L., Chenopodium album L. and Sinapis arvensis L. The hyperbolic model showed a good fit to the experimental data. The three broadleaf weeds showed low and similar competitive indices (i ranging from 1–08 to 1–75), supporting the hypothesis of a high sunflower competitive ability. The economic threshold was four to six plants m−2 for all three weeds in the case of weed control by hoeing and about six plants m−2 for S. arvensis in the case of a postemergence treatment with imazamethabenz. Limitations and approximations in estimating competitive parameters are pointed out and discussed. Aptitude à la compétition et seuils de nuisibilité de trois mauvaises herbes dicotylédones dans le tournesol Des données recueillies dans des expérimentations au champ conduites dans différents environnements et au cours de différentes années ont été utilisées pour déterminer l'aptitude à la compétition et les seuils de nuisibilité de Ammi majus L., Chenopodium album L. et Sinapis arvensis L. Le modéle hyperbolique fournissait un bon ajustement aux données. Les trois mauvaises herbes avaient des indices de compétition bas et similaires (i de 1,08 à 1,75) ce qui conforte l'hypothèse d'une forte aptitude à la compétition du tournesol.Les seuils économiques étaient 4–6 plantes m−2 pour toutes les mauvaises herbes dans le cas de désherbage mécanique et environ 6 plantes m−2 pour S. arvensis dans le cas de traitement de post-levée avec l'imazaméthabenz.Les limitations et les approximations dans l'évaluation des paramètres de la compétition sont identifiés et discutés. Die Ergebnisse ließen sich mit einer hyperbolischen Gleichung gut beschreiben. Die Konkurrenzindices i von 1,08 bis 1,75 waren fur alle 3 Arten ahnlich niedrig, worin sich die starke Konkurrenz der Sonnenblume widerspiegelt. Bei mechanischer Unkrautbekampfung lagen die Schadensschwellen fur alle 3 Unkrauter zwischen 4 und 6 Pflanzen m−2, fur Nachauflaufbehandlung mit Imazametabenz fur Sinapis arvenis bei 6 Pflanzen m−2. Grenzen und Annaherung der Bestimmung von Konkurrenzparametern werden eingehend diskutiert.

    Notes: Summary The daily course of stomatal conductance and transpiration was monitored on each separate face of vertical phyllodes of various acacias. The selected phyllodes had a north-south orientation so that one side faced eastwards and the other westwards. The principal measurements were made on Acacia longifolia and A. melanoxylon in Portugal in late summer and autumn, and additional measurements were made on A. ligulata and A. melanoxylon in Australia. In Portugal, irrespective of soil moisture status, conductance showed on early morning maximum with a subsequent gradual decline and sometimes a subsidiary peak in the late afternoon. Maximum conductances appeared to be a function of soil moisture status, whereas the decline in conductance in the late morning and afternoon was correlated with changes in phyllode-to-air vapour pressure deficits rather than changes in phyllode water status. The relationship of transpiration to phyllode water potential did not appear to be influenced by soil moisture status, although transpiration was less in drier soils and in the afternoons, this latter factor contributing to a marked hysteresis in the relationship. The opposing faces of the phyllodes exhibited a high degree of synchrony, showing parallel stomatal opening and closing, despite their large differences in irradiance. Stomatal conductance tended to be higher on the eastern faces in the morning and lower in the afternoon. In A. longifolia the daily average of relative conductance was much the same for both faces, but in A. melanoxylon that of the eastern face was higher and was retained even when the normal orientation of the phyllodes was reversed by turning them through 180°. Synchrony must be achieved by the stomata of both sides responding to common environmental or endogenous signals which are perceived by both surfaces with equal sensitivity.

    Notes: Summary This study is part of a series of investigations on the influence of altitude on structure and function of plant leaves. Unlike most other mountain areas, the Southern Alps of New Zealand provide localities where physiologically effective moisture stress occurs neither at high nor at low elevation, but the changes in temperature and radiation with elevation are similar or even steeper than in most other regions. In comparison with results from other mountains, where moisture may impair plant functioning at low elevation, this study allows an estimation of the relative role of water for the expression of various leaf features typically associated with alpine plants. Maximum leaf diffusive conductance (g), leaf nitrogen content (LN), stomatal density (n) and distribution, as well as area (A), thickness (d) and specific area (SLA) of leaves were studied. Three different plant life forms were investigated over their full altitudinal range (m): trees, represented by Nothofagus menziesii (1,200 m), ericaceous dwarf shrubs (1,700 m), and herbaceous plants of the genus Ranunculus (2,500 m). In all three life forms g, LN, and n increased, while SLA and A decreased with elevation. Recent investigations have found similar trends in other mountains from the temperate zone, but the changes are larger in New Zealand than elsewhere. Herbs show the greatest differences, followed by shrubs and then trees. It is concluded that g is dependent upon light climate rather than water supply, whereas SLA and related structural features appear to be controlled by the temperature regime, as they show similar altitudinal changes under different light and moisture gradients. The higher leaf nitrogen content found at high elevations in all three life forms, suggests that metabolic activity of mature leaves is not restricted by low nitrogen supply at high altitude. In general, the leaves of herbaceous plants show more pronounced structural and functional changes with altitude than the leaves of shrubs and trees.

    Notes: Abstract Applications of the growth promotive gibberellins (GAs) GA4 and 2,2-dimethyl GA4, and of C-16,17 endo-dihydro GA5, which is known to promote flowering while inhibiting stem growth in the long-day grass Lolium temulentum, were made to micropropagated plants of Metrosideros collina cv. Tahiti, a highly ornamental cultivar with an intermittent flowering pattern. Gibberellin A4 and 2,2-dimethyl GA4 stimulated vegetative growth both in elongating shoots, and internodes of shoots developing from buds that were quiescent at the time of GA application. Abscission of the apices of expanding shoots, a feature of mature Metrosideros plants, was inhibited by these GAs, the rejuvenation of micropropagated plantlets being enhanced. However, C-16,17 endo-dihydro GA5 differed from GA4 and 2,2-dimethyl GA4 by having no promotive effects on vegetative growth, and no inhibition of apical abscission. Notwithstanding this contrasting effect on vegetative growth, high doses of GA4 or C-16,17 endo-dihydro GA5 similarly reduced flowering on shoots to which either GA was applied. Reduced flowering in response to applied GAs is common in many woody angiosperms, and in this instance was probably the combined result of abortion of developing floral structures in quiescent buds, and a preferential inhibition of bud break for floral buds relative to vegetative buds, particularly by GA4. Finally, both C-16,17 endo-dihydro GA5 and GA4 strongly inhibited bud break in this woody angiosperm, although GA4 could initially stimulate bud break when applied to vegetative buds close to the expansion stage. The above findings, in toto, highlight the sensitivity of Metrosideros to both classes of GA in a variety of growth and development processes.
