    Notes: Tungsten films, grown by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition for very large scale integration interconnect applications, suffer from a high internal tensile stress that leads to contact failure. We show with wafer curvature measurements that the stress can be relaxed via viscous flow at room temperature by irradiating the films with energetic ions after deposition. Transmission electron microscopy does not indicate significant structural changes in the W films during irradiation. We varied the irradiation conditions (from 140 keV B ions to 400 keV P ions) and find that the flow rate scales with the nuclear stopping power. Similarities and differences with beam-induced mixing and diffusion are discussed. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract In this review, we discuss the ecological and evolutionary consequences of plant-herbivore interactions in tropical forests. We note first that herbivory rates are higher in tropical forests than in temperate ones and that, in contrast to leaves in temperate forests, most of the damage to tropical leaves occurs when they are young and expanding. Leaves in dry tropical forests also suffer higher rates of damage than in wet forests, and damage is greater in the understory than in the canopy. Insect herbivores, which typically have a narrow host range in the tropics, cause most of the damage to leaves and have selected for a wide variety of chemical, developmental, and phenological defenses in plants. Pathogens are less studied but cause considerable damage and, along with insect herbivores, may contribute to the maintenance of tree diversity. Folivorous mammals do less damage than insects or pathogens but have evolved to cope with the high levels of plant defenses. Leaves in tropical forests are defended by having low nutritional quality, greater toughness, and a wide variety of secondary metabolites, many of which are more common in tropical than temperate forests. Tannins, toughness, and low nutritional quality lengthen insect developmental times, making them more vulnerable to predators and parasitoids. The widespread occurrence of these defenses suggests that natural enemies are key participants in plant defenses and may have influenced the evolution of these traits. To escape damage, leaves may expand rapidly, be flushed synchronously, or be produced during the dry season when herbivores are rare. One strategy virtually limited to tropical forests is for plants to flush leaves but delay "greening" them until the leaves are mature. Many of these defensive traits are correlated within species, due to physiological constraints and tradeoffs. In general, shade-tolerant species invest more in defenses than do gap-requiring ones, and species with long-lived leaves are better defended than those with short-lived leaves.

    Notes: Abstract. Diagnosis of an ectopic, infrasphincteric ureter can be difficult because the renal moiety drained by the ectopic ureter is often small and functions poorly. We present a 6-year-old girl with urinary incontinence caused by bilateral vaginal ectopic ureters that were not seen on excretory urography or renal sonography and were diagnosed only by contrast-enhanced computerized tomography.

    Notes: Abstract An impediment to analyzing the effect of nutritional factors on biologic processes or health status in human populations arises from the relatively small dietary differences that exist between individuals in relation to large periodic fluctuations in dietary intake and the imprecision with which diet is normally assessed. We report here on characteristics of dietary variability in a group of 14 young men who successfully completed an intervention study specifically designed to create large differences in fat intake between baseline and two dietary intervention-periods each lasting two months (during which safflower and coconut oil supplements were given). We found that in the second supplemental phase of the intervention inter-person sources of variability were greatly increased over the low-fat baseline values. For proportion of calories as fat it increased to 64.2% of total variance from 21.6% without supplementation; for saturated fatty acids, 47.3% from 17.7%; for polyunsaturated fatty acids, 62.4% from 22.8%; and for the P:S ratio, 71.5% from 21.6%. During the first intervention phase we observed only moderate changes. Reasons for the intervention phase differences in effect, implications for feeding trials designed to look at dietary fat effects, and the need for future studies aimed at clarifying these results are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Twenty-six hospitalized females were evaluated prospectively for acute urinary retention. They could be divided into three etiologic groups: 1) transient; 2) neuropathic; and 3) pelvic causes. An initial division into the first two categories could be obtained in 21 patients by the history, physical examination and urine cultures, sparing further unnecessary testing. The rest were evaluated by pelvic sonogram, and unexpected potentially life-threatening pathology was found in 4 patients. An algorithm for the evaluation and treatment of acute urinary retention in females is presented.
