    Notes: This study examines different work–related foci of commitment, such as the work group and the employing organization as well as the current occupation. It assesses how these foci of commitment are influenced by, and influence, attitudes and emotions at work. Data from employees and managers in the British health–service sector shed light on the associations. Regression analysis reveals a strong association between positive work–related emotions and commitment levels, leading to a higher intention to stay with the organization. Implications for management and how the study fits into the existing body of commitment literature are discussed

    Notes: It is still widely accepted that women managers are not catching up on their male peers with regard to seniority of position and pay. To learn more about the problem, a study was conducted into the career development of MBA graduates from one of the leading UK business schools. Of the 344 alumni who took part in the study, 96 were women. The respondents came from the UK and from many nations around the world. The career development of the graduates, their competences and their career aspirations were compared across those variables. Differences in performance based on discrimination due to gender were studied. Variables of career development of the graduates, their competences and career aspirations were compared for women and men. The findings indicate that studying for an MBA has a place as a vehicle to reduce discrimination and increase self-confidence of the individual. Results also indicate the potential value of having an MBA in dealing with discrimination due to gender in organisations.

    Notes: Research has indicated that employees who remain within an organization after significant downsizing or delayering will experience adverse effects as profoundly as those who have left. This phenomenon has been labelled the "survivor syndrome". This article first of all examines data from an employee opinion survey in a large UK financial institution following sequential and significant restructuring. The empirical findings contradict some propositions suggested in former studies in that evidence of "survivor syndrome" was not apparent. Second, the article explores possible reasons for the non-existence of the syndrome. The findings are discussed in the light of the process of the redundancy programme.

    Notes: Building on lessons from a Biblical story, this paper analyzes and suggests mental frameworks and an innovative perspective for managing contemporary new psychological contracts, by drawing on a case of a nation which was found unfit for a new type of existence, a different life ethos, and philosophy. In that story, a strategic decision was made for that generation, which was to be consumed in the desert. From this story the paper projects onto contemporary career concepts and approaches. The paper acknowledges the difficulties employees face in today's turbulent labor markets. It concludes with offering a variety of options available to executives and a set of strategic approaches of managerial career systems that organizations can apply.
