Notes: This paper deals with the problem of developing a low cost remote supervisory control system with multimedia features of distributed robotic cells. The distributed robotic cells are locally controlled by different vendor systems. In the automated factories, a low cost and not isochronous backbone network is usually installed to transfer process data from the production level to the other ones. The proposed architectural prototype makes possible on different remote platforms a supervisory control with full process database access and field audio/video signal. The case of field vocal messages and animated plant synoptic using the low cost factory backbone network has been considered. On the remote station it is possible to use commercial supervisory control applications. A first case study, the remote supervision of a robotic cell, installed in the University of Naples, has given satisfying results. In addition, this application has shown the possibility of using the prototype for educational and research purposes, making available remote access to laboratories.

Notes: Abstract Raman spectroscopic investigation of Ti(III) solutions in various alkali metal chlorides and mixtures shows that the solvent cations affect the nature of the complex anions formed. We have studied in detail the effect of adding lithium chloride upon the anion TiCl 6 3− , which is the only species present in Ti(III) solutions in molten caesium chlorides at 700° C. At 20 mol% LiCl a new band appears in the TiCl 6 3− spectrum, and it becomes the most important one from 80% LiCl onwards. This line cannot be associated with any vibration of TiCl 6 3− nor TiCl 4 − but could be attributed to the condensed form Ti2Cl 9 3− .

Notes: Abstract Cyclic voltammetry is used to study the reduction of ZrCl4 in molten NaCl, KCl-LiCl or CsCl and the nature of the various electrochemical processes. The chemical reactions between Zr metal and the M2ZrCl6 complex occurring in the bath are also studied.

Notes: Abstract The effect of alkali metal cations in molten chloride baths on the behaviour of Ti(III) in these melts has been studied. With caesium chloride the percentage of total dissolved titanium present as Ti(II) after 72 hours at 700° C is 0.1%, whereas in lithium chloride it is 2%. In the presence of excess titanium metal the proportion of Ti(II) is always much higher. In LiCl it depends strongly on the area of titanium exposed and may reach 85%. In CsCl, on the other hand, this factor has no effect since a fine dispersion of powdery titanium appears at the very beginning of the reaction. The amount of Ti(II) remains close to 50%. In all the baths studied, the electrochemical reduction of Ti(III) at 700° C occurs in two steps: Ti(III) + e → Ti(II)E 1/2 = − 1.6V versus Cl−/Cl2 Ti(II) + 2e → Ti(O)E 1/2=−2.1V versus Cl−/Cl2. These results are different from those previously obtained in CsCl-LiCl (40–60 mol%) at 400° C, where reduction is a one-step process.

Notes: Abstract TiNi alloys are potentially able to include in their structure a significant quantity of hydrogen which allows them to be used as electrodes in hydrogen batteries providing their electrical characteristics are suitable. TiNi alloys were produced in hyperquenched tape shape. These tapes were then electrolytically hydrided. X-ray analysis of hydrided and nonhydrided samples was performed. In the hyperquenched tape the B2 and the ‘R’(H) phases, the presence of which is linked to the hyperquenched constraints, coexist. The hydrided electrolytically hyperquenched tape has the TiNiHx (x=0.3) formula and contains the two hydrided forms corresponding to those that are unhydrided. At around 100°C, under hydrogen gas, the quadratic hydride parent of B2 remains alone. The TiNiH0.3 sample has been analysed using differential calorimetry under argon and hydrogen gas. In the cubic structure only two octahedral sites are occupied by hydrogen. In TiNiH0.3 only the smaller octahedral sites are occupied by electrolytic hydrogen. If TiNiH0.3 is then charged with hydrogen gas, this gas occupies the other larger octahedral site. The hydride has the formula TiNiH0.85.

Notes: Abstract Infrared analysis of baths which are mixtures of (KCl/NaCl) (50/50) with KF and ZrCl4 in the molar ratio 4 or 6, indicates that the species present at 750° C are ZrF4 and K3ZrF7. Voltammetric study of these melts containing 1 wt % Zr shows that ZrF4 reduces in three steps: ZrF4 → ZrF2, ZrF4 → Zr, ZrF2 → Zr, whilst K3ZrF7 is reduced via: K3ZrF7 → Zr or K3ZrF7 → ZrF2, ZrF2 → Zr. It appears that ZrF4 vanishes completely by increasing the KF/ZrCl4 ratio until the KF concentration is able to stabilize K3ZrF7 in the melt.

Notes: Depth profiling analysis of passive films grown on the surface of Fe—17Cr, Fe—13.5Cr—3.5Si and Fe—12Cr—5Al alloys (with or without Mo additions) in acidic and basic media has been performed by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and ion sputtering. Original depth concentration profiles for oxidized iron and chromium inside the passive film and unoxidized (metallic) components of the alloys were extracted using the sequential-layer-sputtering model with the assumption of a step-like interface between the passivated overlayers and the metallic substrate. A quantitative analysis requires an accurate adjustment of the sputter rate employed as a fitting parameter (related here with numerical values of inelastic mean free paths). In this way, some consistent relationships can be established between the absolute atomic depth distributions of elements constituting the passive films, its thickness and the electrochemical characterization of the alloy resistance with regard to pitting corrosion.
