Notes: Abstract A new formula for the calculation of atomic electronegativities from the atomic size and nuclear effective charge is proposed. The formula has the same dimensionality as the one used for the thermochemical scale. The calculated ionic and van der Waals atomic electronegativities are used for the interpretation of the bond nature in binary and coordination compounds (in particular, the bond ionicity is calculated in molecules and crystals of the AB type).

Notes: Abstract The lack of information about the van der Waals radii of metals can be compensated for by using the results of spectroscopic investigations of van der Waals molecules. It has been shown that the interatomic distances in these molecules obey an additive scheme if one allows for the polarization effects. The van der Waals radii of the alkali metals, Ag, Mg, Zn, Cd, Hg, B, Al, In, and Si, have been determined from the interatomic distances in their heteroatomic molecules with atoms of noble gases. Use of the obtained radii for crystal chemistry is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Van der Waals radii of elements were determined from the data of the structural inorganic chemistry: from intersitial distances in CdX2- and graphite-type structures, bond lengths in van der Waals molecules, molar volumes of A2-type substances, refractometry data, and from quantum chemical and correlation ratios. The recommended values of van der Waals radii of elements are tabulated.

Notes: Abstract The results of direct experimental determination of covalent bond lengths in molecular structures are presented. This made it possible to establish the values of normal covalent radii. The recommended values of covalent radii for 56 elements are tabulated.

Notes: Summary 1. A study has been made of the NH4F-WO3-H2O system by the isothermal solubility method (25° isotherm). 2. In the system, the initial part of the isotherm is characterized by the formation of solid phases of variable composition. Increasing the concentration of NH4F in the system is accompanied by formation as a solid phase of a compound of the composition (NH4)9(WO3)5F9. 3. The compound(NH4)9(WO3)5F9, and the hydrolytic decomposition product, NH4WO3F, were separated individually and investigated by chemical, thermal, and crystallochemical analysis. 4. On the basis of the thermal and crystallochemlcal data, some ideas are expressed as to the nature of the hydrolytic decomposition of the compound (NH4)9WO3)5F9.

Notes: Summary 1. Mixed halides of mercury HgXY were synthesized by halogenation of crystalline mercurous salts, their alcohol suspensions, and by mixing the corresponding mercuric halides. 2. The physicochemical properties of mixed halides of mercury differ depending on the order of addition of the halogens, i.e., the properties of HgXY and HgYX are not the same.

Notes: Conclusions 1. The chalcogenide Cr2SSeTe crystallizes into a hexagonal crystal with the following parameters for the unit cell: a=3.54 and c=5.73. 2. A comparison of these parameters with the ones calculated from the respective characteristics of the homogeneous chromium chalcogenides [4] (a=3.63 and c=5.77 A) proves to be insignificantly different, which indicates that the synthesized substance is an individual one chemically.

Notes: Conclusions 1. LaSF, CeSF, PrSF and NdSF were synthesized; the last two were synthesized for the first time. The densities and indices of refraction of these substances were measured. 2. An x-ray diffraction study of powders of the sulfofluorides indicated that they crystallize in the PbFCl structural type. The parameters of the cell and interatomic distances were determined in all the samples synthesized. 3. The IR and electronic spectra of sulfofluorides of the rare earth metals of the cerium group were taken and interpreted.

Notes: Conclusions Solid solutions of NH4Cl-CsCl and NH4I-CsI were obtained by the explosion compression method. The theory was expressed that the synthesis of the solutions took place at the time of the action of the high pressure.
