Notes: Moraxella bovis, the causative agent of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivttis, exhibits several virulence factors, including pili, haemotysin, leukotoxin, and proteases. The pili are filamentous appendages which mediate bacterial adherence. Prior studies have shown that Q-piliated M. bovis Epp63 are more infectious and more pathogenic than l-piliated and nonpiliated isogenic variants, suggesting that Q pili perse or traits associated with Q-pilin expression, promote the early association of Q-pillated bacteria with bovine corneal tissue. In order to better evaluate the role of Q pili in M. bovis attachment, several M. bovis strains and a recombinant P. aeruginosa strain which elaborates M. bovis Q pili but not P. aeruginosa PAK pili, were evaluated using an in vitro corneal attachment assay. For each strain tested, piliated organisms attached better than non-piliated bacteria. M. bovis Epp63 Q-piIiated bacteria adhered better than either the l-piliated or non-piliated isogenic variants. Finally, recombinant P. aeruginosa organisms elaborating M. bovis Q pili adhered better than the parent P. aeruginosa strain which did not produce M. bovis pili. These results indicate that the presence of pili, especially Q pili, enhances the attachment of bacteria to bovine cornea In vitro.

Notes: Summary Thirty previously untreated adults with diffuse histiocytic and diffuse undifferentiated lymphoma were treated with a combination of adriamycin, vincristine, prednisolone, and l-asparaginase. Complete remission was achieved in 11 out of 12 cases with stage III and 7 out of 18 cases with stage IV disease (P〈0.005). Bone marrow infiltration, clinical central nervous system involvement, and massive intra-abdominal disease all influenced the prognosis adversely. Complete remission was followed by cranial irradiation and intrathecal methotrexate, and maintained with weekly cyclophosphamide and methotrexate and daily 6-mercaptopurine. The duration of remission was significantly longer for patients with stage III disease (the median of which has not been reached), than for patients with stage IV disease (P=0.007). Survival was significantly longer for patients in whom complete remission was achieved than for those in whom it was not (P=0.001), and also for patients with stage III than for those with stage IV disease (P=0.02).

Notes: Summary The fact that the atrial gland ofAplysia californica contains peptides that will induce egg laying when injected into mature animals prompts consideration of the role played by the gland in the normal physiology of the animal. We have approached this consideration with a combination of morphologic and physiologic investigations. Morphologic study reveals the gland as a stratified epithelium comprised of three cell types. The only evidence for secretory activity was seen in the columnar epithelial cells containing large vesicular inclusions. These cells appear to discharge their secretory product into the lumen of the large hermaphroditic duct. While we cannot specify the contents of the secretion from the columnar cells, perfusate of the duct lumen contained bioassay active material only when the duct was exposed to depolarizing conditions. Though additional experiments in which exogenously administered atrial gland peptides were found to initiate egg laying in animals from which the source of the egg laying neurohormone had been extirpated, it appears likely that the atrial gland substances are not endocrine factors. Instead, their function must be sought among the exocrine products of the duct epithelium.

Notes: Abstract Cultured skin fibroblasts from six patients demonstrating clinical signs and biochemical characteristics of infantile phytanic acid storage disease (IPSD) were examined by electron microscopy, using cytochemical procedures for the demonstration of peroxisomal catalase activity. In four of the six fibroblast cell lines peroxisomes strongly reactive for catalase were present in numbers similar to those found in normal fibroblasts. Liver biopsy tissue from one of these patients showed no typical hepatic peroxisomes, but did show small, marginally reactive bodies. In two other IPSD fibroblast cell lines peroxisomes with appreciable cytochemical reactivity were rare or absent. It seems, therefore, that infantile phytanic acid storage disease is heterogeneous with respect to the presence of cytochemically recognizable peroxisomes, at least in the cases studied here. Furthermore, peroxisomes may be markedly affected in one cell type — liver — and yet not affected in another — skin fibroblasts — within a single individual.

Notes: Summary We have studied the distribution of peroxisomes in the abdominal ganglion ofAplysia californica using electron microscopic cytochemical methods. Reaction product for catalase was observed in small ovoid or dumb-bell-shaped bodies in the perikarya of many of the neurons. The abundance of these catalase-reactive peroxisomes is considerably greater than is the case in vertebrate neurons. While the non-neuronal cells of the Aplysia abdominal ganglion do contain appreciable peroxisome populations, there were few peroxisomes in glial cytoplasm directly adjacent to the perikarya, again contrasting with vertebrate ganglia in which the satellite cells are a principal site of peroxisomes. Peroxisomes are present throughout the perikaryal cytoplasm. In the regions in which lipochrome granules abound, peroxisomes are frequently seen closely associated with these granules; glycogen is abundant nearby. The association of peroxisomes, lipochrome granules and glycogen is interesting in view of the propinquities of peroxisomes to lipid droplets and lipofuscin granules reported for non-neuronal vertebrate tissues, and in view of the growing evidence indicating that some of the roles of peroxisomes are in lipid metabolism and in gluconeogenesis. Some of the lipochrome granules themselves show reaction product in ganglia incubated to demonstrate catalase activity and some react in tissue incubated to demonstrate acid phosphatase activity. Such observations suggest that the enzymatic capacities of the lipochrome granules merit further studies, and that the granules may be of complex or heterogeneous nature.
