Notizen: This paper examines our recent experiences and progress in porting an in-house magnetostatic finite-element analysis code, H3D, to multiple-instruction, multiple-data (MIMD) parallel computers using the distributed-memory, message-passing (DMMP) paradigm. Experiments with two different message-passing software libraries were done, one specifically for the Intel iPSC/860 Hypercube, and another called parallel virtual machine (PVM) that runs on many different systems from networks of heterogeneous workstations connected by a local area network to supercomputers with multiple closely coupled CPUs. Techniques are discussed for performing key parts of the finite-element analysis in a parallel environment, including calculation of the source field, matrix assembly, and matrix solution. In conclusion, PVM is the preferable environment for most applications, despite its lack of maturity, because it facilitates porting software to many hardware systems without extensive rewriting.

Notizen: A time-domain finite-element solution for evaluating the magnetic field distribution in a two-dimensional rotating structure is presented. The analysis is applied to crack detection in rotating shafts and the numerical results are compared with tests with good agreement.

Notizen: In the paper, impedance boundary conditions are represented in terms of scalar magnetic potential. This leads to a scalar magnetic potential formulation of three-dimensional (3-D) eddy current problems with small skin depths. The scalar potential formulation is then reduced to a weak Galerkin form. The finite element discretization of this form results in two (volume and surface) "stiffness'' matrices. This approach completely avoids vectorial calculations in 3-D eddy current analysis.

Notizen: Open-boundary problems are encountered in the analysis of electric and magnetic fields in engineering applications. Examples of these are dielectric stresses in electrostatic applications, eddy current fields due to shielded power cables and bus ducts, induction heating, and magnetic levitation. Discretization of the total field region is computationally unwieldy. Bounding the field region, on the other hand, by a diamagnetic boundary imposes the effect of artificial sources. A hybrid approach to solving the field problem which combines the traditional finite element method for the interior with harmonic functions for the potential solution in the exterior region is presented. The method is applied to illustrative eddy current problems.

Notizen: Recent years have witnessed a growing demand for economical and energy efficient designs of electrical machines and their reliability in operation. Improved performance prediction at the design stage helps achieve some or all of these objectives in a cost effective and efficient manner. With the advent of digital computers, it has become possible to achieve this goal with a high degree of accuracy and minimal turn around time. A design study for tradeoffs of cost versus efficiency and reliability requires the use of sophisticated computational tools. Traditionally computer programs have been designed with a view to provide the user multiple options in terms of analyses, data manipulation, and post-processing of results. These codes have tended to be large and have been generally implemented in a batch mode with long turn around times. In this paper, an alternative approach to the traditional computer analysis of electric machines is presented using an interactive user-friendly software package. A finite element electromagnetic analysis program is considered, as it is one of the more significant and difficult to implement codes required frequently for design use. The advantages of interactive and generalized engineering software for the application mentioned above are examined. The detailed steps of engineering design analysis of a rotating electrical machine carried out with the help of an integrated software is described.

Notizen: Permanent magnet synchronous machines and induction motors are often required to operate on-line starting or inverter-fed systems, which results in nonsinusoidal stator currents. These, in turn, give rise to undesirable harmonics and power losses which degrade motor performance. In this paper a time-domain analysis is presented for evaluating the magnetic field distribution in the two-dimensional cross section of the machine under load conditions. The analysis is applied to a permanent magnet synchronous machine under locked rotor conditions. Although for purposes of this analysis, the iron permeability has been assumed a constant, the method can be easily extended to include iron saturation.

Notizen: Shape functions and numerical integration formulas for three-dimensional finite element analysis as found in most finite element reference books are incomplete. For example, shape functions and integration formulas for a pyramid with a quadrilateral base are missing. It is also difficult to find symmetric higher-order integration formulas for triangular and tetrahedral elements. In general, these shape functions and integration formulas cannot be satisfactorily derived as degenerate cases of shape functions and integration formulas for hexahedral (brick) elements. In this paper we present C°-continuous quadrilateral pyramid elements and integration formulas for two- and three-dimensional elements.
