Notes: Purpose - To evaluate the efficiency of modifying epoxy resin using phenol-nonyl phenol based polymer (PNPF) for toughness improvement and optimise the results of such a modification. Design/methodology/approach - For effective toughening, various compositions were made by incorporating PNPF at different concentrations. The impact and adhesive strengths of the unmodified and modified epoxy networks were characterised. Findings - The modification of epoxy resin using PNPF showed significant enhancement of impact and adhesive strengths over the unmodified one. The modification caused the formation of a chemical linkage between PNPF and resin which led not only to a phase separation, but also to formation of intrinsically strong chemical bonds across the PNPF phase/resin matrix interphase, which was the main cause of the improved impact and adhesive strengths. The optimum results were obtained at 10?phr (parts per 100 parts of epoxy resin) of modifier. Research limitations/implications - The modifier, PNPF, used in the present context was synthesised from phenol, nonyl phenol and formalin using oxalic acid as catalyst. Practical implications - The developed method provided a simple and practical solution to improving the toughness of a cured epoxy. Originality/value - The method for enhancing toughness of a cured epoxy was novel and could find numerous applications in the surface coating and adhesive.

Notes: Summary Eleven patients with Wegener's granulomatosis were seen at this Institute over a period of 20 years. There were six men and five women. The average age of presentation was 38.3 years, and the mean duration of symptoms was 10.5 months. Constitutional symptoms (82%), cough (82%), ocular symptoms (64%), arthralgias (55%), rhinorrhoea (55%), haemoptysis (45%), nasal granuloma (45%), otorrhoea (36%), sinusitis (36%), skin lesions (27%), and renal failure (27%) were the clinical manifestations encountered. All patients had an elevated ESR, and 55% had leucocytosis. Proteinuria and haematuria were observed in 64% and 55% respectively. Chest radiographs were abnormal in 82%. In four patients the disease had a fulminant course and the patients died before adequate treatment was given. Two patients received corticosteroids alone and have since been lost to follow up. Five (45%) received adequate cytotoxic therapy and have done well for 8–46 months (mean, 24.8 months) after diagnosis. Wegener's granulomatosis in India is apparently similar to that seen elsewhere, but the high incidence of tuberculosis interferes with early diagnosis and treatment.

Notes: Vinyl ester BisGMA [Bisphenol-A-glycidyldimethacrylate] resin has been modified byincorporating Titanium dioxide(TiO2)nanoparticles (0.5%-2% by weight). An ultrasonic mixingprocess was employed to disperse the particles into the resin system prior to casting and curing testspecimens. From TEM investigation, it is found that the particles are nano size (5-60nm) anddispersed throughout the entire volume of the resin. Dynamic mechanical analysis was conductedfor both the neat resin and nanocomposite. In dynamic mechanical analysis, nanocomposite showsincrease in storage modulus (6%), and glass transition temperature (5.8%) from neat resin system.Thermogravimetric analysis shows 7.5% better thermal stability. In addition, the nanocompositeshows enhance in the stiffness by 5% in flexural loading. The Tg and flexural modulus of thenanocomposites were enhanced as the particle volume fraction was enhanced and than decreased

Notes: Abstract Temperature-dependent electrical resistivity in a set of YBa2Cu3O7−x /Ag composites, all prepared under an identical sintering schedule, is analyzed to extract granularity information. The weak-link resistivity ρ wl across the grain boundaries and the percolation factor α arising due to current frustration caused by misalignment of anisotropic grains and sample defects such as voids and cracks are estimated from the residual resistivity ρ0 and the temperature coefficient of resistivity dρ/dT. Variation of these parameters with Ag vol.% quantifying the extent of granularity indicates that granularity in the composites decreases and their electrical characteristics tend to be identical to that of Ag-free YBa2Cu3O7−x single crystals and epitaxial thin films as Ag vol.% approaches a value where onset of current percolation occurs through Ag channels. The increased α and decreased ρ wl observed at higher Ag vol.% explains the larger grains in the composites with narrow size distribution.

Notes: Abstract Various defects arising from lattice mismatch and coordination incompatibility at the cation sites are known to lend the cuprates a metastable state at temperatures and pressures where they exhibit superconductivity. The present paper considers the metastability induced by coordination incompatibility at Cu(1) sites in oxygen-deficient 123 type systems and looks for their possible effects on charge and spin degrees of freedom. Depending upon the concentration of oxygen vacancies, the resulting unstable charge state at the Cu(1) sites is shown to either temporally fluctuate or spatially equilibrate, providing a mechanism for the 90 K and the 60 K plateaus, with a peak in the former observed in the YBa2Cu3O7-y , samples prepared under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions.
