Notes: Poly(vinyltoluene-α-thiol) and poly(1-methacryloyloxyethane-2-thiol) were prepared by the polymeranalogous hydrolysis of the respective polymeric isothiuronium salts. The sorption of heavy metals from low-concentrated solutions was studied for both thiol polymers. Affinity increases in the series Pb 〈 Ag 〈 Hg in experiments in vitro. In vivo the mercury resorption in the gastrointestinal tract of rats was partly blocked by the methacrylate derivative if mercuric chloride or methylmercurichloride was administered (in the case of phenylmercurichloride the polymeric thiol was ineffective).

Notes: Diagnostic methods for detecting gastric diseases using chymotryptic digestion of pepsin are discussed. Peptide maps can be prepared using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Batchwise chromato- graphy by use of membranes with immobilized Tyr(I2) was used for the isolation of pepsin from gastric mucosa extract or from human blood serum. Enzymes immobilized using suitable antibodies or through their sugar moieties can be used for the preparation of peptide maps because such enzymes share good steric accessibility to their active binding sites and possess increased thermal stability. Biospecific adsorption of proteins to immunosorbents combines the simultaneous isolation of these enzymes with their oriented immobilization. Proteins were stabilized by hydrophilization through the attachment of saccharide residues containing galactose residues. These residues could be activated by oxidation using galactose oxidase and subsequently immobilized to hydrazide-containing solid supports.

Notes: Solution properties of poly[1(2-hydroxyethyl)pyridiniumbenzene sulfonate methacrylate] and poly[1(2-hydroxyethyl)trimethylammoniumbenzene sulfonate methacrylate] were studied. Within a certain concentration range of some added low molecular weight electrolytes, phase separation occurs. The dependence of intrinsic viscosity on molecular weight was determined and the steric factor estimated for both polymers. For nonaqueous solvents, an extrapolation of the dependence of the refractive index increment of the polymer on the refractive index of the solvent leads to an apparent refractive index of the polymer, different from the refractive index determined directly by the immersion method. Some peculiarities of light scattering in solutions with no electrolyte added are mentioned.

Notes: Oligomeric products of the anionic polymerization of phenylpropiolonitrile were separated by elution chromatography on calcium hydroxide. The separation occurs not only according to the molecular weight, but mainly due to the cis-trans-isomerism. Four isomeric trimers were found among the isolated fractions, which demonstrated the polymerization to be non-stereospecific.
