Notes: Abstract Electron impact excitation rates are calculated for all transitions in He i and ii between individual terms for n⩽4. Rates calculated for a large number of different experimental, theoretical and semi-empirical cross sections are compared. The rates are approximated by the expression AT n exp(-αE 0/kT) over the range 4000 ⩽ T ⩽ 50 000 K for He i and 104 ⩽ T ⩽ 105 K for He ii.

Notes: A homologous series of copolyether-urethane-ureas were synthesized with polypropylene glycol segments having molecular weights of approximately 200, 400, 700, 1000, 2000, and 3000. These copolymers were characterized using tensile measurements and dynamic mechanical spectroscopy. The dynamic mechanical measurements at low frequencies (≤ 1 Hz) showed evidence of the existence of an α-relaxation process. This was attributed to constrained polyether segments located at the interfacial region between the hard urea segments and the soft polypropylene glycol segments.

Notes: The α and β relaxations of a variety of polyethylenes have been extensively studied using lowfrequency dynamic mechanical methods. The main focus of this work has been both the control and the quantitative measurement of the key structural factors that describe semicrystalline polymer systems. The structural factors that have been examined in detail include the level of crystallinity, the crystallite thickness, the interfacial content, and the supermolecular structure. Consequently a variety of other types of supplementary measurements were made to accomplish the necessary characterization. The location of the α transition is found to depend primarily on the crystallite thickness. There also is the distinct possibility that the interfacial structure exerts an important influence. The level of crystallinity and the supermolecular structure do not play a significant role in the location of Tα. A strong correlation is found with the carbon-13 NMR crystalline T1, which is reported in a separate paper. From analysis of the influence of the different structural factors on the β transition, it is concluded that this transition results from the relaxation of chain units which are located in the interfacial region. The elusiveness of this transition and the contradictory reports that have existed in the literature are given a ready explanation. The enhancement of this transition by branching and copolymerization follows naturally as does its invariance with counit content.

Notes: Trimethylene oxide was polymerized to polyoxytrimethylene glycol by two synthetic routes. High molecular weight polytrimethylene oxide was synthesized using a coordination catalyst system consisting of triethylaluminum, acetylacetone, and water, then ozonized and reduced with lithium aluminum hydride in anhydrous ether to form hydroxyl end-capped polyoxytrimethylene glycol. In the second route, the polyoxytrimethylene glycols were synthesized directly by the cationic polymerization of trimethylene oxide with boron trifluoride/ethyl ether as catalyst and 1,4 butanediol as co-initiator. (AB)n block copolyether-urethane-ureas based on these polyoxytrimethylene glycols were synthesized and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, and dynamic mechanical and stress-strain measurements.

Notes: Poly(ethylene oxide/isoprene/styrene/isoprene/ethylene oxide) block copolymers were synthesized using potassium-napthalene catalyst in tetrahydrofuran. The dynamic and thermal properties and water absorption of these tri-block copolymers were determined and related to their bulk morphology.
