    Notes: A variational theory of the radiant emittance of the mercury-argon discharge is developed and applied to an investigation of the effects of alterations of the isotopic composition of the mercury. The theory includes the effects of transport of resonance radiation, elastic and inelastic collisions, resonant exchange of excitation, diffusion of the mercury atoms, the isotope- and hyperfine-shifted structure of the resonance line, and the surfaces of the discharge on the emittance. Two sensitive parameters—the branching ratio for radiative decay of the resonance state and the rate constant for resonant exchange of excitation—are fitted to data on natural mercury. The remaining insensitive parameters are given values based on microscopic estimates. The resulting theory reproduces the experimentally observed results for mercury—196 enhanced mixtures. We predict small effects for mixtures with other isotopes enhanced. The crucial role played by resonant exchange of excitation is emphasized.

    Notes: Abstract A briefly pulsed light is brighter than a pulse of longer duration. For a brief flash of fixed duration and small area, enlarging a target results initially in an increase in brightness. Beyond some critical area, the target dims with further increases in size. These two phenomena are the temporal and the spatial Broca-Sulzer effect respectively. Each effect can be modeled using a generalization of the Hartline-Ratliff equation. The resulting analysis produces a mathematically unified treatment of both effects.

    Notes: Abstract The mathematical relationship describing recurrent lateral inhibition is expressed as a linear operator equation. Under quite general conditions, the operator equation is shown to have a unique nonnegative solution. It is also shown that the linear operator for recurrent impedance is representable as an integral operator and that, when in application to physiological models it is interpreted as recurrent inhibition, the corresponding linear equation assumes a form more general than the well known Hartline-Ratliff equation. Finally, we introduce a class of impedance operators based on the probabilistic theory of Markov processes, solve the corresponding linear integral equation, and apply the theoretical properties of the solution to the analysis of physiological and psychophysical phenomena.

    Notes: Abstract Cell-free extracts of d-fructose grown cells of Pseudomonas putida, P. fluorescens, P. aeruginosa, P. stutzeri, P. mendocina, P. acidovorans and P. maltophila catalyzed a P-enolpyruvate-dependent phosphorylation of d-fructose and contained 1-P-fructokinase activity suggesting that in these species fructuse-1-P and fructose-1,6-P2 were intermediates of d-fructose catabolism. Neither the 1-P-fructokinase nor the activity catalyzing a P-enolpyruvate-dependent phosphorylation of d-fructose was present in significant amounts in succinate-grown cells indicating that both activities were inducible. Cell-free extracts also contained activities of fructose-1,6-P2 aldolase, fructose-1,6-P2 phosphatase, and P-hexose isomerase which could convert fructose-1,6-P2 to intermediates of either the Embden-Meyerhof pathway or Entner-Doudoroff pathway. Radiolabeling experiments with 1-14C-d-fructose suggested that in P. putida, P. aeruginosa, P. stutzeri, and P. acidovorans most of the alanine was made via the Entner-Doudoroff pathway with a minor portion being made via the Embden-meyerhof pathway. An edd - mutant of P. putida which lacked a functional Entner-Doudoroff pathway but was able to grow on d-fructose appeared to make alanine solely via the Embden-Meyerhof pathway.
